Wrap-up for Winter Storm "Cupid"
Winter Storm "Cupid" wasn't quite a huge mess at Cape Girardeau, but it wasn't a non-event either. Luckily the temperature was just warm enough -- by a whisker -- that only a portion of the rain was freezing rain.
Cape Girardeau received 1.04 inches of precipitation during the storm. We would be in much worse shape if most or all of that rain had been able to freeze. On the other hand, if the temperature had been slightly warmer, none of it would have froze, and we'd be complaining about all of the hype for a simple rainstorm.
Based on reports from weather watchers, it appears many areas in Southeast Missouri saw around two-tenths of an inch of ice accumulation on trees and powerlines, with slightly higher amounts in Bollinger and Stoddard counties.
Almost all of Missouri saw significant snowfall -- except, of course, for us. We didn't miss it by much, though, as shown on the national snow depth map:
We still have to deal with a few more weeks of winter, despite what a groundhog might say. Early March is actually the best time of year for thundersnow (or thundersleet as we saw yesterday). The 6-10 and 8-14 day long-range forecasts are suggesting cold but dry weather, so the outlook for a big snow isn't the best.
