Heavy rain this weekend, then possible change to snow

Posted Friday, December 2, 2011, at 4:40 PM

More rain is expected to arrive Saturday night and last through at least Monday. The five-day rainfall projection is quite colorful, painting Cape Girardeau in the purple-ish region for 1.5 to 2.5 inches.

Areas to the south near Memphis sit in the orange zone with 6+ inches. I haven't seen these colors since our epic flooding last spring.

Colder air is expected to arrive Monday night, potentially setting up a rain-changing-to-snow scenario. As usual in these situations, the heavier moisture will depart just before the cold air arrives, preventing this from turning into a big snowstorm. The NWS forecasters at Paducah say that they "DO NOT EXPECT TOO MUCH WITH THIS."

On the other hand, last weekend's system did bring heavy snow to isolated areas even though the conditions were marginal for snow, with the ground temperature above freezing. So anything is possible.
