Weather or Not
In this blog, weather junkies on the Southeast Missourian staff talk about (what else?) the weather. Give us your observations, folk wisdom and Farmers Almanac tales -- it's a weather free for all.
First winter precip of the season
Posted Monday, October 19, 2009, at 11:06 AM
If you blinked, you probably missed the isolated sleet showers that passed through Saturday morning. At around 11 AM, I heard the sound of rain and looked outside to see white things falling from the sky. "Those are some strange looking raindrops," I thought. "But it's too warm to snow!"
When I stepped outside and felt a couple ice pellets bounce off my skin, it was clear this was not plain old rain. The sleet only lasted for a minute, but it marked the first winter precipitation of the season.
Meanwhile, Saturday night provided the first frost and freeze of the season, with observed temperatures at the Cape Airport dipping below freezing for at least five hours, touching a low of 28°F. This was lower than the mid-30s that had been originally predicted on Friday.

Voting continues in the poll to decide the naming scheme for this season's parade of winter storms. To help you decide, I've put together the proposed lists for "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy" (see below). I'm still working on the other options.
---
** The Simpsons
~(I thought this would be easy considering how many characters are on the show. However, I had to ignore the names from last year, which didn't leave any good 'I' or 'Q' names, while 'O' and 'R' are a bit of a stretch.)
Akira
Bumblebee Man
Comic Book Guy
Disco Stu
Eddie
Fat Tony
Groundskeeper Willie
Herman
Jasper
Kodos
Lionel Hutz
Milhouse
Nick Riviera
Old Jewish Man
Poochie
Reverend Lovejoy
Sideshow Bob
Troy McClure
Üter
---
** Family Guy
~(This show doesn't have as many characters, so this was a bit tricky. And there is still no 'I'.)
Adam West
Brian
Chris
Diane Simmons
Ernie the Giant Chicken
Francis
Greased-up Deaf Guy
Horace
Joe
Lois
Meg
Neil
Ollie
Peter
Quagmire
Stewie
Tom Tucker
