Jawbone's Up wristband tracks your daily activity, diet, and even sleep patterns and reports it to your phone. Just one of the hot gadget trends for 2012.
You may have noticed a little gap in my tech blogging. Well fear not loyal readers, the technical one has returned!
So now that the Holiday season has passed and 2012 is trucking along...let me share a few things with you that I view as growing trends this year:
Tablets are going to continue to be HOT! Whether you plop down the bucks for an iPad, sleek Android tablet, Kindle Fire, or Nook you wouldn't be disappointed. With tax season in full swing, even companies like Turbo Tax are showing people doing their tax return on tablets in current TV ads. Kids love the touch interface for games, learning apps, and reading. OK, adults like those things also, but we can also pay bills on them. (It's OK to chuckle at that one)
Smartphones will continue to dominate our portable communication needs in 2012. Point and shoot digital cameras sales will start to slide this year because the cameras in most new phones are pretty amazing... plus it's already in your pocket. Facebook, Twitter, Pintrest, Craigslist, news, weather, gossip and more always at your fingertips, plus they can also make phone calls.
Ultrabook/Macbook Air style super portable laptop computers will really start to dominate this year. For those of us that still need a real computer, this new batch of machines (weighing less than a hardback book) will find their way into our handbags, backpacks, and hearts. Most have no moving parts making them very durable and extending battery life up to 7 hours. Great for watching Mad Men (cough), I mean working on a spread sheet for the office during that long plane ride.
Wearable fitness/wellness tracking devices will start to get a big foothold in 2012. Many of these are simply water resistant bracelets that you wear 24/7. They keep track of everything from how many hours of restless sleep you had, to heart rate, to even calories burned during your normal work day. All data is compiled on your smartphone, tablet, computer, or nightstand alarm clock!
Streaming movies and music will continue to eat away at the sale of "physical media" like CDs and DVD/Blu-Rays. Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, Pandora, Spotify, and other services are standard features on most new electronic toys. No need to run out to the video store to buy or rent a disc on movie night...and no forgetting to return it when it's due. Many new aftermarket car stereos and new vehicles are equipped with Pandora now for steaming music on the go from your smartphone.
Whole house automation used to be something for just the rich and famous. 2012 will be big for this exploding technology category. Now controlling your heat from work or checking on the baby in their crib is super affordable, easy, and fun. Integrating electronic sub-systems in your home together makes great sense...not just for creature comforts, but for security and utility savings as well.
That's it for now. 2012 looks pretty groovy in the eyes of the Technosaurus.
