Swan and Gannon's High School Equivalency Bills Pass in Missouri House
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. --HBs 405 & 381 were passed in the Missouri House this week with a bi-partisan majority vote of 142/7.
HB 405, sponsored by Rep. Elaine Gannon, (R-Desoto) and HB 381, sponsored by Rep. Kathryn Swan, (R-Cape Girardeau), address the access and affordability of the high school equivalency test for Missourians.
The bill provides that the state would subsidize no less than 50 percent of the examination fee for first-time test takers and may subsidize up to100 percent of the cost of the test, subject to appropriation by the General Assembly.
Rep. Swan said, "The recent increase in the cost of the exam to $95 had become a barrier for many in our state. By helping workers obtain a high school equivalency certificate, we remove a major obstacle for them in finding jobs to support their families."
