I've had some emails and comments from people who are having login problems on the two new contests we have going right now on seMissourian.com.

About two weeks ago we introduced these contests on our site. In one, you vote for your favorite Christmas movie from the choices we give you for a chance at free tickets to see the Rockettes at the Fox Theater in St. Louis.

Click here to get to the Christmas movie contest.

In the other, you vote for the cutest s.e.Parent kid to determine the "readers' choice" winner, to be printed in the magazine in February.

Some people are having trouble logging in, getting strange messages that they're already logged in but they can't vote because they're not logged in. I spoke with a support specialist at the company that hosts our contests, who said this is likely a browser or firewall security problem. Anyone having this trouble should email support@upickem.com.

Let me know if that works.

The dramatist guild weighs in on SEMO

The Dramatist Guild of America — a theater trade group with 6,000 members nationwide with offices in New York City — recently sent a letter to Southeast Missouri State University Provost Jane Stephens about the university's plan to scrutinize its season ticket offerings in light of the controversy over the recent student production "Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You."

I won't delve back into the hubbub, but the links in the above paragraph will give you all the background you need, along with this link to a letter from Wendy Rust about the play's placement on the season ticket series.

Looks like this thing's gone national. You'll also find a link to the letter from guild president John Weidman at the top of this column.

Deer hunter identified

In my column in Wednesday's paper, I told our print readers about a photo gallery of deer harvests in history we've posted online, asking them to email me if they recognized anyone in the photo.

I got my first answer today, from Debra Dalton, who's grandfather is in photo No. 6. His name was Fred Campbell.

Here's what she said:

"Matt, I have information about one of the past deer pictures. Number 7, is my grandfather, Fred Campbell (1888-1960).

"He was an avid hunter. Muzzle-Loaders were a favorite of his. In the "Cape Girardeau Faces and Places 1850-1960" book page 105, is a picture of Fred Campbell with one of his guns later in his life. He was an early employee of the Telephone Company in Cape Girardeau. He was one of seven children ( all boys ), of which many of his brothers were also hunters.

"He hunted in the area of the family farm on route W near Fruitland, as well as the "Stony Battery Lodge" in Wayne County". He would be in the company of a brother Herbert Campbell, Dr. D. B. Elrod, and Lester Crites. Also C. W. Boutin, president of Southeast Missouri Telephone Co., and T. T. Ferguson of the firm. The story was told that he was denied participation in local shooting matches because he would always take top choices.

"This deer was taken in the forties, possibly 1944. Missourian newspaper clippings dated 12-21-1944 relate news of kills. Also in an OUT OF THE PAST column dated Nov, 4, 1994, 50 years ago Nov. 2, 1944 tells of the kills. At that time, the family (Fred, wife Dessie Runnells Campbell and sons Charles W. and Russell) lived at 927 Perry Avenue in Cape Girardeau. A picture of the kill and my grandfather was also taken at the Perry home and the deer was mounted. After his death in 1960 the picture and "the deer head" was brought to our house on North Missouri Ave. and remained in our living room for 43 years till Russell's death in 2003. At that time my brother became the owner."

If you recognize anyone in the gallery, shoot me an email at msanders@semissourian.com.

My user name is 14 letters long, it only lets me enter 10... yep, they've got problems.
