Rezoning the river campus; developments in the Lawless case; your thoughts on courthouse security

This Monday isn't the busiest news day we've ever had, but there are some things going on worth noting.

One of the biggest is the Cape Girardeau City Council meeting coming up tonight, in which the council will consider a proposal to rezone the area around the River Campus to change it from a "light industrial" to a "downtown commercial" zone in an effort to encourage development.

We all know that city and university officials have hoped the River Campus would become a boon for downtown, and this is the next step in making that dream into reality.

Reporter Rudi Keller will be at the meeting tonight to hear the arguments for and against the change and report the council's votes. We'll have the story posted at seMissourian.com at the end of the meeting.

Of course, we're also following the news that Thorngate is reducing its workweek because of economic troubles. Looks like the plant is cutting down its week to three days. Just more troubling economic news, kind of like what we heard recently about HAVCO.

More from the Lawless case

This morning police and courts reporter Bridget DiCosmo received an email about DNA evidence in the Mischelle Lawless murder case that we've been closely covering over the past several months.

See the email from the state for yourself and read about its significance on Bridget's Cape Crime Wave blog.

New weekly news poll

We've posted a new weekly news poll on our homepage today. This time we're asking you your thoughts on courthouse security, and whether or not it needs to be stricter.

You can find the poll on the right side of the page, under the weather forecast.

Videos of the great outdoors

Our photographers shot a couple of videos over the weekend of some great outdoor recreational events. Fred Lynch shot a mountain bike race here in Cape Sunday and a horseshoe tournament in Scott City on Saturday.

Check them out if you need a little entertainment.

On the zoning question, I'll have to ask Rudi, and he's not around at the moment.

As for Kezer, I believe the state still maintains that he acted alone, and the DNA under Lawless' nails could have come from someone else under different circumstances. I'll check with Bridget.

Bear:

Just talked to Bridget. The state says they're testing the DNA against a database to see if they can determine who it's from (though they've ruled out Kezer and the sparring partner).

So now they're saying that Kezer may have had an accomplice (and they do maintain that Kezer is a murderer).

Bear:

Talked to Rudi, and anything that's already there will be grandfathered. If the city changes the zoning, they can't kick a business out.
