Rick Vandeven, a Libertarian challenging U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson in the race for the Eighth Congressional U.S. House seat, is planning several local appearances during October.
Vandeven's campaign announced the following appearances in a news release Monday:
Oct. 20- march in the Southeast Missouri State Homecoming Parade with members of the campus Libertarians and the Cape Girardeau and the Scott County Libertarian parties.
Oct. 24- participation in a candidate forum in Ste. Genevieve sponsored by the Ste. Genevieve Herald. Vandeven is at this time the only candidate in the race who has committed to appear, according to his campaign.
No other known forums for the race are planned at this time. Democrat Jack Rushin is also running for the House seat. Rushin's campaign has been looking for an opportunity for a debate against Emerson or participation in a candidate forum for some time, according to a spokesperson from his campaign who recently contacted the Southeast Missourian. Emerson participated in four debates in 2010 against Vandeven, Democrat Tommy Sowers and Larry Bill, an independent. Vandeven garnered 2 percent of the vote in the last election to Emerson's 65 percent, Sowers' 28 percent and Bill's 3 percent.
