Back to BlanchardPosted Monday, January 30, 2012, at 3:36 PM
Footprints of firefighters show on a Blanchard student's depiction of the school in the hallway floor on the morning following the Dec. 6 fire at the school
Students went back to their regular classrooms today after attending classes at Lynwood Baptist Church since the week of Dec. 6, when a fire damaged several rooms and adjoining hallways in the school.
The community effort to aid Blanchard students and staff in their time of need was outstanding--the church opened its doors to the unknown and donations flooded in to replace items for the PTO-sponsored holiday store for students, as wells as Backpacks for Fridays, which sends some children home with a bag full of food on weekends when there isn't enough to go around.
School officials have praised the church for its efforts. The church was chosen by the district as the best place to hold classes because of the availability of space, a cafeteria and kitchen.
Last week, the church served 90 feet of banana splits to students as they prepared to return to Blanchard.
This morning, Blanchard staff wore T-shirts bearing the phrase "Team Blanchard" across the front and a firefighters' symbol on the back over the date of the fire. Teachers worked through the weekend to ready their classrooms for the return of students.
Kohlfeld is quick to remind whoever she can of Blanchard's motto, "The school with a heart."
The appreciation all those involved have for one another certainly showed many hearts.
