Alma Schrader Elementary PTO president Robin McCollough submitted a letter to principal Ruth Ann Orr Tuesday expressing her intent to resign her position in the organization effective Feb. 1.
"Please understand the last six years have been great until the last month, and I cannot believe the mean-spirited, hateful, condemning and ugliness that has come about due to the 'uniform policy' and the way people are treating one another," McCollough wrote.
In her letter to Orr and following a meeting Tuesday night at the Cape Girardeau public library where a group of parents met and discussed creating an alternative dress code proposal, McCollough said she believes the issue has caused a division of long-standing friendships in the Cape Girardeau public schools' community of parents and teachers.
McCollough voiced her opposition to the first draft of a uniform proposal created by a committee made up of district staff during the first of two public forums earlier this month, citing concerns over cost of the clothing items that would have been required. A similar, but now revised and less restrictive dress code policy is scheduled to be voted on by the school board Feb. 27.
McCollough served on the PTO since 2005.
