A Four-Year-Old Boy Validates my Trump Vote
We are living in strange, uncertain times, and my final commitment to join the Trump anti-establishment movement was validated recently by a chance encounter with an inspiring four-year-old boy.
As a community blogger, I made light of Donald Trump’s pursuit of the presidential nomination in several of my early blogs. I confess I was too quick to join the doubters and almost let myself succumb to being overly judgmental, which goes against my own principles. I was so frustrated with the whole political process; I stopped writing blogs back in February.
The propaganda against Donald Trump over the past year has been overwhelming; coming not only from media pundits, conservative and liberal, but the vitriol has been spewed by both Democrats and Republicans. Refusing to surrender to the name-calling and character assassination, I retreated to my neutral “safe space” and attempted to make sense of the madness surrounding the 2016 presidential campaign.
The final two nominees for the most powerful position in the world should represent America’s best and brightest. Yet we have two candidates with the highest negatives of any two candidates in modern political history. One candidate, a career politician with decades of scandals on her resume, is under investigation by the FBI, while our second choice is a previous reality-TV star with no political experience and an unfiltered approach to speaking.
My first presidential vote as a young, impressionable father went to a peanut farmer from Georgia who promised to bring change to Washington—Jimmy Carter—a nightmare presidency only surpassed by the 8-year imperial rule of President Obama. I redeemed myself four years later by helping to elect a constitutional patriot to the White House—Ronald Reagan—and I made a promise to myself that my vote would always go the person who would put the American people first.
And here I stand in 2016, months away from my next presidential election. While Hillary Clinton was NEVER a consideration, I knew Trump—even with his flaws—was my only choice. I just needed a “sign”—something to soothe my conservative heart—something that would inspire me and give meaning to those four words “Make America Great Again.” That “sign” came a few nights ago from an innocent four-year-old boy.
I was attending a 50th wedding anniversary/family reunion dinner and one of my best friends from St. Louis was there. He is not only a Trump supporter, but an official Trump delegate. His four-year-old grandson Dean was just one of dozens of children enjoying the festivities.
As the night progressed, the DJ began handing the microphone over to various attendees and we were entertained by karaoke performances from both young and old.
Later, as people were gathering their kids and belongings, and the festivities seemed to be concluding, little four-year-old Dean and his mom walked up on the stage.
A silence fell over the crowd as the mother announced that her son wanted to sing a song to honor the couple celebrating their 50th anniversary. The little blonde-headed boy, dressed in his Sunday best, complete with bow tie, looked like a miniature “Trump.”
I was expecting a children’s preschool song but the next couple of minutes blew me away. With no hesitation and no music, he proudly began to sing, “God Bless America, land that I love.” As the lyrics continued, his voice became stronger as he emphasized “stand beside her and guide her.” The room was dead quiet as we all watched and listened in amazement. As he sang those final few words, “my home, sweet home,” I got goose bumps, and the stunned crowd rose to their feet, cheering and applauding.
As corny as it might sound, that was my “sign.”. This little boy’s patriotic performance-- the grandson of a Trump delegate—a representative of the next generation—had unknowingly validated my November vote to “Make America Great Again.”
