Is "Trump the Braveheart" Igniting a Political Revolution?
Love him or hate him, Donald Trump has awakened the revolutionary spirit of millions of Americans who live in the forgotten landscape between the liberal fortresses of New York City and Washington D.C, and the sanctuary cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles.
The media is trying its best to destroy Trump, but their efforts may be futile. Following his speech in Alabama before an estimated crowd of 30,000, Politico ran with this headline: "Ghost of George Wallace Loomed Large over Donald Trump's Alabama rally." That negative analogy spurred my memory of a different Wallace---William Wallace.
Even a conservative skeptic like myself, as I watch an untamed, unyielding Donald Trump, I'm reminded of Mel Gibson in the 1995 movie, Braveheart. Trump's unscripted fight against the political establishment and Washington's desire to control every aspect of American lives, has resurrected the ghost of the legendary thirteenth century Scottish hero, William Wallace.
Wallace rallied his Scottish countrymen and women against a cruel, overreaching monarch, using only volunteer, everyday people against a powerful English army. Late in the story, the defiant Braveheart, just seconds before his execution at the Tower of London, refused to submit to the king and beg for mercy--- and seconds before his death, he shouts, "Freedom!"
Donald Trump's "freedom shout" is a warning to both Republican and Democratic candidates that the so-called "silent majority" will no longer cower on the sidelines. The American people have been pushed to the limit by a multitude of factors.
Last month, the number of people not in the labor force reached a record high of 93,770,000. Millions of Americans are being forced to work part time jobs. They cope with higher insurance premiums and deductibles, and they struggle with higher costs on basic essentials such as milk, fresh produce and meat.
Yet every month, they're told to be thankful the government saved them from a great depression. The recovery--the slowest since WW II--is not being felt by the poor and the middle class, as wages either drop or remain stagnant. The people's anger builds.
The welfare rolls continue to grow, while the unionized public sector and government employees continue to receive bonuses and raises, even as their agencies are exposed as corrupt--The VA, the TSA, the IRS, the GSA--pick your federal agency--they're all incompetent and bloated.
Public anger continues after decades of an open border policy, allowing illegal immigrants, drug runners, and human traffickers to freely enter our country. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, the total immigrant population has surged by 1.7 million since 2014.
The American people are witnessing an anti-police movement, with rioting and protests not seen since the 60's and 70's. They hear warnings from their government that ISIS-inspired terrorists are in all 50 states. Shocking headlines are becoming the norm--"Four Marines Killed at Chattanooga Military Facility"--"Over 50 Islamic terror-related arrests in the U.S. thru June." Yet, the people's government continues to downplay the threat--and, yes, the anger of American citizens grows even greater.
This is where the Trump phenomenon comes in. The American people are witnessing a candidate who is unafraid--a candidate who will get in the face of established leaders and, unapologetically, express the feelings and frustrations that have been festering and building inside of American citizens for decades.
Trump's language is blunt and offensive to the far-left pundits and media mouthpieces who want to control politically-correct messaging. But those days of suppressing the speech of those who disagree with their propaganda, may finally have met their match with Trump.
Many Republican candidates find themselves stumbling and stammering to connect with this new political energy that Trump has released. Liberal news anchors and reporters, for the first time in years, find themselves being challenged, and they look bewildered and confused, as to how to handle a presidential candidate like Trump, who refuses to back down.
We may be witnessing the birth of a political revolution that will continue until Election Day, 2016. The next fourteen months will not be for the weak-of-heart, as more and more Americans unite, not by party, but by a conviction for reforming the status quo.
Not a single political analyst could have ever predicted that Trump's entry into the presidential race would inadvertently, with his unorthodox style, open a game-changing, political Pandora's Box. The winning Republican and Democratic nominees will both be facing an energized electorate not seen in recent elections. Americans are awake. They're angry. And, they won't be fooled again.
