"How's That Constitutional Democracy Working Out?" asks King George III.
If King George III were alive today and could write a blog, I believe it would read something like the following:
Two-hundred and thirty-nine years ago your forefathers declared their independence from Great Britain and my monarchy. In the year 2015, how's that constitutional democracy working out for you?
You may call your leaders presidents, but it appears to me your country has been slowly grooming families that tend to govern more like royalty. Of the past twenty-seven years, twenty of those years in America were ruled by two families--the Bush's and the Clinton's.
And now, as your next presidential election approaches in 2016, lo and behold, who desires the throne of the Oval Office?--none other than Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush. A win by either candidate could lead to another eight years of political family dominance, totaling almost three decades, and the odds are, one of the two will win. They are both capable of raising over a billion dollars--the new standard for winning--and they both have powerful, influential, political machines.
It appears to this king, a candidate needs only to concentrate that power and money in a narrow band of "swing states" to win the White House. I used your convoluted internet machine and found a website called Fair Vote, which told me this. During the final six months leading up to Election Day 2012, President Obama spent $314 million in television advertising, with 99.6% of that money targeting voters in only ten states. The other 40 states were irrelevant in winning the White House. I find that quite odd.
I understand you have three branches of government, and while the Republicans may control the legislative branch, the real power of government is now concentrated in the presidency and the government agencies that work at his pleasure.
As a former King of Great Britain, I'm actually jealous of your president's immense powers. Upon his command, he can use drone missiles to execute American citizens overseas, if he and his security advisors deem those people to be an imminent threat to America. He's the judge, jury and executioner. I don't remember seeing that "kill list" clause in your constitution, and your so-called Bills of Rights, seem to slowly be vanishing.
The president has the NSA, which not only collects private information on American citizens, but has been caught spying on world leaders and allies overseas.
His Justice Department protects him from numerous scandals, while the IRS intimidates and harasses individuals and groups who oppose his policies.
And what happened to the citizens' watchdog, the free press? President Obama's administration has prosecuted more government whistle-blowers and gone after more journalists than all the previous presidents combined. Even the NY Times editorial board, which is a friendly ally of your president, said Obama is "threatening fundamental freedoms of the press."
I dare say, my dear American subjects, President Obama has unofficially become your 21st century king. His agencies pick and choose which laws will be enforced, and when the legislative branch doesn't submit to his will, he creates his own laws through executive actions and orders.
Your Supreme Court has also become politicized and seems to side more often with the Executive Branch on major issues. If the progressive candidate, Hillary Clinton, wins in 2016, the next lifetime appointments will turn your highest court into a permanent tool of the president, and you'll basically have one, all-powerful branch of government. Sounds more like the kingdom I once ruled in the 18th century.
By 2024, America will have become the suppressive, authoritarian country your forefathers and European immigrants fled from centuries ago. The American Revolution caused me great hardship and pain. But now, I feel vindicated as history continues to repeat itself.
As one of your presidents, Abraham Lincoln, once said, "America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."
Could there be a future revolution looming on America's horizon?
