The New America -- USA or USSR?
Growing up in the 1950's and 60's meant I spent many hours in history classes learning about life in the USSR, and how fortunate I was to have the freedoms and individual liberties as a citizen in the USA. Every morning I started my school day with fellow students proudly facing the classroom flag and saying the pledge of allegiance. Back in the day, our teachers encouraged patriotism and love of country, a practice that is slowly disappearing in today's schools.
Now, almost fifty years since my high school graduation, I'm beginning to see signs of an American government that's beginning to eerily resemble the old Soviet Union. Unfortunately, today's young people have no idea that they are gradually losing their individual freedoms as the federal government grows in size and scope, controlling almost every aspect of their lives.
Our federal government for the past five years has been run by progressive liberals that truly believe they know what's best for us as citizens. 2013 was a year of startling revelations of just how our country has morphed into a Soviet-style state.
The USSR had the KGB, an agency that conducted internal security and intelligence over its people. Today's new America has its counterparts, the NSA and the IRS.
As we have learned since Edward Snowden, former NSA contractor, released classified documents, the National Security Agency has been establishing a surveillance state which has extended well beyond its intended authority. Our government has been gathering metadata, including phone call information and internet activity on every American citizen. With the advent of cell phone GPS technology, the NSA has the ability to track the movements of every American citizen. Also revealed in 2013, was the ability of our government to actually turn your computer's web cam on without your knowledge. All of this secret spying has been done in the name of national security but is scarily similar to the tactics of the Soviet's KGB.
The KGB was also engaged in controlling any dissent by its people against the Soviet government. In 2013, we discovered the most feared agency of our government, the IRS, was using its power to target and intimidate conservative groups who openly disagreed with the policies of our president during the 2010 and 2012 elections. To this day, not a single IRS official has been fired or held accountable. The Department of Justice is supposedly investigating the IRS abuse, but the probe is being led by attorney Barbara Bosserman, a former donor and supporter to the Obama political campaign.
Healthcare for the people in the Soviet Union was controlled by the MOH, the Ministry of Health. In our new America, the HHS, (Health and Human Services), now dictates the healthcare of every citizen. Obamacare implementation is just now unfolding, and like the Soviet Union, our government now controls which hospitals and clinics you may use, and which doctors you're allowed to visit. If you fail to follow the government's mandates you will be penalized with pre-determined fines which will be enforced by, of course, the IRS.
Another important aspect of the USSR was the government's control of public information thru their newspapers (Pravda) and television broadcasts (CCCP). Today's news media is not state run but it might as well be. As we've seen in the past five years, the mainstream media (ABC, NBC and CBS) tend to promote and support the liberal, progressive agenda developed by this White House. Our constitutional watchdogs have evolved into pampered lapdogs doing the will of the government.
The most infamous example of government propaganda was created during the 2012 re-election campaign--the controversial interactive feature from the Obama campaign website, "The Life of Julia."
The purpose of this cartoon feature was to promote the benefits of big government and how its programs can guide your lives from cradle to grave. Julia demonstrates how a progressive government is there for her from age 3, as a toddler in head-start, to receiving free contraceptives as a young lady, to government loans for college, to government healthcare as an adult, all the way to age 67, when Julia can retire and enjoy the benefits of Social Security -- which is on the road to bankruptcy.
Our government, now over $17 trillion in debt, has its tentacles in every aspect of our lives. The question is, will Americans finally wake up and push back, or become complacent and allow the growth of government to continue?
A year-end poll conducted by Real Clear Politics shows that 57% of Americans now disapprove of President Obama's handling of the economy, and 63% believe our country is on the wrong track. But even more encouraging is a recent Gallup Poll which shows 72% of Americans now think big government poses a greater threat to the future of the United States than big labor or big business. That is the highest percentage in nearly fifty years.
The upcoming elections in 2014 and 2016 will determine whether our country will continue morphing into a USSR-like state, or whether we'll go back to being the USA that our founding fathers envisioned....but that door is quickly closing.
