Has Obama's Administration Crossed a Constitutional Red Line?
President Obama and his administration have a documented history of publicly attacking his critics. Recently in his commencement speech at Ohio State University, he called on young Americans to follow his lead in his disdain for his 1st Amendment detractors.
"You've grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that's at the root of all our problems; some of these same voices also are doing their best to gum up the works. They'll warn that tyranny is always lurking just around the corner. You should REJECT these voices."
Thanks to our Constitution we'll never have to worry about living under a tyrannical-style government that would dare use its powers to intimidate and target its citizens...right? No. You would be wrong.
In documents obtained by the Washington Post, it's been revealed that the Internal Revenue Service has been targeting non-profit conservative groups for the past two years. According to the Treasury Inspector General's report, the IRS intentionally singled out groups seeking a tax-exempt status with "tea party" or "patriot" in their names.
The IRS also targeted organizations that "criticize how the government is being run" and groups that sought to educate Americans "on the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights." I would say the tyrannical "red line" is being approached by this government, if not already crossed.
Now we've learned the free press is once again under attack. The U.S. Justice Department has secretly obtained two months' worth of phone records belonging to the Associated Press. AP is calling it a "massive and unprecedented intrusion" into the news gathering process.
This administration has allowed a culture of arrogance and abuse of power not seen since Nixon.
In a free democracy like ours, you would never dream its government would secretly give military-style weapons to dangerous Mexican drug cartels, all without the knowledge of the Mexican government or even Congress. When confronted by those critical "voices", the government agencies involved in the gun-running program "Fast and Furious" denied any wrongdoing. When pressed for answers by Congress, President Obama finally asserted executive privilege, thus defying requests and subpoenas from legislative and judicial branches for any information the White House deemed sensitive.
The secret program resulted in numerous Mexican deaths including two American agents, yet no one was held accountable. No one was fired. And the truth remains buried.
Even more recently we have the Benghazi scandal. Four Americans died, including the death of an American ambassador, yet no one was held accountable. No one was fired. And the cover up continues.
Have President Obama, his inner circle, and the government agencies that serve under him crossed a Constitutional red line? We can only wait and watch as Congress continues to investigate this administration's unfolding scandals.
