Childish Political Ploy: Barring Citizens from the "People's House"
I've commented previously on how childish both political parties have become, but President Obama and his administration should be given a "people's time out" for their current behavior.
Our spoiled president is throwing a calculated tantrum because his bully tactics failed to stop his own sequestration from being implemented. For the first time in his presidency, he is being forced to actually reduce federal spending.
Up until now President Obama has always gotten his way. He's never had his spending and tax hikes successfully challenged by conservatives and told "No!" He got his way on the $800 billion stimulus bill-- the largest "spending" bill in American history. He got his way on Obamacare, which is full of new taxes and penalties. And recently, he got his way with a ten-year $600 billion tax increase.
And now, Obama's administration must somehow find $85 billion in spending reductions within a $3.6 trillion budget. It's like telling your teenager, "I was going to give you $36.00 to spend at the mall, but I'm going to have to reduce that amount by 8 cents." I don't think your teen would throw a fit after receiving the news, but our president and his administration are.
Their first brilliant idea--let's shut down White House tours so families, school children, and visitors, who planned their trips to the nation's capital months or years ago, are barred from touring the "people's house." That will save $18,000 weekly on Secret Service duties, but even better, it will really tee a lot of people off. The mainstream media will surely blame the mean Republicans. It's readily accepted that when bad things happen under Obama's leadership, it's their fault, not his.
Hopefully, Americans won't find out about Senator Tom Coburn's published lists of wasteful government spending over the past three years, with his "Wastebooks." Here are ten typical examples:
1. $550,000 for a documentary about how rock music contributed to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
2. $350,000 to support an International Art Exhibition in Venice, Italy.
3. $10 million for a remake of "Sesame Street" for Pakistan.
4. $764,825 to study how college students use mobile devices for social networking.
5. $120 million in benefit checks to dead federal employees.
6. $325,000 to create a robotic squirrel.
7. $492,000 to researchers at Wellesley College to analyze the trustworthiness of information on Twitter.
8. $600,000 to Columbia University to study "online dating."
9. $592,000 to study the origins of why chimpanzees throw their food and feces.
10. $338,998 to study women, weaving, and wool in Iceland.
My suggestion to President Obama and his administration would be to read Senator Coburn's reports. Then, rather than intentionally inflicting spending cuts that anger people, such as freeing illegal aliens from jail, look for sensible spending cuts in the area of government waste.
In 2012, over 600,000 people visited the White House, and since 1954, the number is 64-million. Canceling White House tours is irresponsible, politically childish, and unnecessary. There's plenty of wasteful government spending that could be eliminated without punishing those people who wish to visit the nation's capital.
