James Baughn was the webmaster of seMissourian.com and its sister newspapers for 20 years. On the side, he maintained even more sites, including Bridgehunter.com, LandmarkHunter.com, TheCapeRock.com, and Humorix. Baughn passed away in 2020 while doing one of the things he loved most: hiking in Southeast Missouri. Here is an archive of his writing about hiking and nature in our area.
River to River Trail Society announces spring hiking schedule

I received the following announcement from the River to River Trail Society in Illinois. The group will be leading hikes (free and open to the public) to some places I've written about in the past as well other places I've never been. See my previous blogs about The Promised Land, Hogg Bluff, Cove Hollow, and Max Creek.

Spring 2012 Hiking Schedule

The River to River Trail Society announces its schedule of guided hikes in and about the Shawnee National Forest. All hikes are open to the public free of charge. Hikes begin at 10:00 AM, unless noted. Most hikes are of moderate difficulty, designed for people in reasonably good health who have done some walking. Sturdy shoes are recommended, please bring your own water and a snack. No dogs, please. The hike on March 24 will visit three of the known surviving Indian walls found in So. Illinois and will be lead by a knowledgeable local expert. Transportation between the three sites will be by personal automobile.

Meet boat ramp parking on Boat Ramp Road at Cedar Lake. Take Rte 127 South from old Rt 13 in Murphysboro for 8.7 miles to boat Ramp Road, go East 1.4 miles.

The River to River Trail Society is a not-for-profit organization founded by John O'Dell during the 1990s to promote completion of the river to river Trail, which now runs throught the shawnee National forest between Elizabethtown on the Ohio river and Grand tower on the Mississippi river. The Society engages in trail maintenance and advocacy and offers guided public hikes during the spring and fall hiking seasons. It also publishes a trail guide to the entire River to River Trail, available for $25 plus $5 postage and handling ($30 total), from the society's headquarters at 1142 Winkleman Road, Harrisburg, Illinois 62946.
