With the Holiday Season now in full swing, many families will soon be travelling near and far to see relatives and friends. While visiting the family might be a fun time, a car ride with young children is often not a pleasurable experience. Here are some basic tips and suggestions that will help make your holiday travel experience more pleasant.
The first thing to remember is to be prepared when you pack for the trip. Sure, if your car is equipped with a DVD player that will help make those long rides more tolerable. But I would recommend instead using the time to encourage some positive family interaction. Travel games (like The License Plate Game, 20 Questions, or I Spy) are a good way to pass the time and spend some quality interaction time together. Favorite books or magazines are also a good idea to bring along. And don't underestimate the importance of just having a family conversation. With the hectic, busy lives that most of us now lead, travelling in a car for a few hours may be the perfect opportunity to have that family "talk time" that you have been trying to include in your busy schedule.
Last but not least, don't forget to bring some pillows and a few healthy snacks if the trip is more than a few hours. Raisins and other dried fruits are a healthy alternative to the traditional junk food. Hopefully these tips will help your family's holiday travel be a much more pleasant experience. Happy Holidays!
