Midget Wrestling: Entertainment or Sport?

Posted Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at 4:26 PM

A midget wrestling event scheduled in Cape Girardeau this week may be canceled if licenses can't be obtained from the Missouri Office of Athletics.

Who knew that midget wrestling was regulated by the state?

Chris Seib, owner of The Pink Galleon Billiards and Games, says he booked the Extreme Midget Wrestling Federation as an entertainment act to perform on Thursday.

State officials say the midgets are athletes, not entertainers, and must follow licensing guidelines for promoters, referees and wrestlers.

Seib said it would take action by the Missouri state legislature to exempt midget wrestling from current state requirements.

I want to meet the legislator willing to sponsor that one!

Here's the full story on the midget wrestling performance scheduled at The Pink Galleon:

It's not yet been announced if the event will be canceled. I'll keep you posted.

The WWE has argured for years that "professional wrestling" is entertainment and not sport, and not subject to "boxing rules", Missouri and most other states do not want to loose the 5% athletic tax (in addition to sales tax) they collect on these events so they continue to regulate them as if it were Professional Boxing (which is where all these regs come from).

Of course they are athletes! Haven't you seen the gold medal awarded for midget wrestling at the Olympics? Whom of us hasn't invited friends over for the midget wrestling SuperBowl parties? And you can't hardly get through a weekend without several updates on midget wrestling matches from ABC's Wide World of Sports. But most importantly, did you not see when the President invited the national midget wrestling team to the White House to celebrate their thrillin upset victory over the Polish national shortski's?

Ok... so professional wrestling is or is not fake?

So, when the Show Me Center had all those WWF Hulk Hogan type of wrestling events over the years -- what were those? Entertainment or an athletic event?
