New Plaza Tire to open next monthPosted Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at 1:31 PM
Construction is rapidly progressing on a new Plaza Tire Service location on North Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau.
Construction is expected to be complete in mid-August on the new facility to replace the current Cape North store located at 1634 N. Kingshighway, only a few yards apart. The new store's address will be 1638 N. Kingshighway.
Following construction, the current Cape North store will be demolished. That Plaza Tire Service location has been in existence since 1995 with the building dating prior to that time.
The new Cape North store will feature expanded showroom and service areas. It will outnumber the current four-bay facility with ten bays to accommodate residential and business growth on the North end of Cape Girardeau.
The newly constructed North Kingshighway store will continue operating during the same hours as the current location; Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday 7:30 am to 1 pm. Appointments are not required but are accepted upon request by calling (573) 339-0019.
Plaza Tire Service carries a variety of brands including Bridgestone, Yokohama, Firestone, Dayton, Michelin, Continental, Pirelli, Dick Cepek off-road tires, Falken and environmentally-friendly Nokian Tyres along with Ultra and Enkei custom wheels. All Plaza Tire Service stores also employ skilled technicians that provide brake, battery, shock, strut, oil change, state inspection, tire rotation and balance and wheel alignment services.
Plaza Tire Service was established in 1963 by Vernon "Pee Wee" Rhodes. Its first location opened at 2149 William Street as Plaza Car Wash, a hand-operated car wash, and a store continues to operate there today. The company gradually expanded to provide tire services in addition to washing cars.
Eventually, the company began selling and changing tires along the sidewalk outside the carwash.
Local regulations ended this practice, and the company chose to exclusively provide tire and automotive services from that point on. The car wash was renovated over one weekend, without losing a single day's work.
Plaza Car Wash was renamed Plaza Tire Service, and its success continues to grow 47 years later.
Today, Plaza Tire Service consists of 49 tire stores and was listed as the 26th largest independently owned tire retailer in North America by Tire Business magazine.
