One Step at a Time -- Part V: It's Official -- I Hate Hills
The good news is that yesterday I walked just under 1/2 of a 1/2 marathon, and I walked it in pretty good time. Five other ladies and I walked 6 miles in 1 hour 34 minutes, which is a 16-minute/mile pace. Not bad for a middle-aged lady who started training just over 2 weeks ago.
The bad news is that our route yesterday had hills. Notice the plural. In fact, it had more hills than I could stand to keep track of. And some of those hills were really difficult -- long and neverending. I hated every one of them. In fact, by the time we got back to Allison's house, I even hated the very small slant of her driveway. A slant I had never noticed before and, truth be told, might have only been a figment of my imagination.
Allison, Karla, and Leah did the Go, St. Louis! marathon last year (which is the one we're doing next month) and have assured Jennifer and I that the route for our 1/2 marathon has almost no hills. Of the two they can remember, one was small; the other was an interstate ramp. I've driven up those ramps a million times and while they don't seem so bad when driving in an air-conditioned car, they may be much worse when on foot. But I figure it's just one highway ramp, not a hundred, so it's not so bad.
I went to bed last night, figuring that I'd be sore today because of the addition of all those hills (which I hate), but so far I'm feeling fine. Tomorrow might be a different story, but I walk 4 miles tomorrow and will probably be able to work out any soreness I might have.
I've been thinking of where I want to walk tomorrow. I'm thinking the mall might be a good place. Last time I checked, it didn't have any hills.
