Emerson viewed as role model for Palin

Eighth District U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson would be a good study for Sarah Palin as she ponders her political future, A.B. Stoddard of The Hill suggests.

In an item posted Wednesday , Stoddard said Palin needs to shore up her credentials with the public if she is to be a believable candidate for president. The model, he said, is Emerson.

"Once she is freed from her gubernatorial constraints and is mulling her options, Palin should take time in between all that Tweeting to read up on some inspiring working mothers in Congress, like Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) and Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.)," Stoddard wrote.

The key, Stoddard said, is to show the public a career of hard work and avoid just being the flavor of the month.

"Emerson and Wasserman Schultz aren't planning to run for president -- that we know of -- but they are each "the fighter" that Palin has described herself to be. More importantly, Wasserman Schultz and Emerson have put in the hard work Palin has not to become steeped in the substantive issues. These are the kind of women who might actually, finally break the glass ceiling and make it to the White House."

You're kidding, right?

Now that's funny

Maybe Emerson should pull a Palin.

Great gobs of goose grease no! Emerson is the exact opposite of Palin. Palin sticks to her values & didn't change her views & positions the second she got power. Joan is a spineless populist.

gman, funny. And I agree.

"Palin sticks to her values & didn't change her views & positions the second she got power."

Well...that's not exactly true. She dropped her "sessionist" values like a hot potatoe once she started running for Governor and...let's not forget the big flip-flop on the Bridge to nowhere deal.

Speaking of Pullin' a Palin.

Here's a new defination for that in the Urban dictionary. Fresh off the press!

Pullin' a Palin

1. Quitting when the going gets tough; abandoning the responsibility entrusted to you by your neighbors for book advances and to make money on the lecture circuit.

2. Bizarre move that will damn ambitions for higher office.

"I bet when people saw Jade they were convinced that David Caruso was pullin' a Palin."

I've got a couple thoughts on this one.

First, I think this was a bad move for Palin, whatever her future ambitions are. If she wants to serve her country in another capacity (i.e. Senator, President), that's fine. I think it looks really bad for her to up and dump her governer's office.

Second, if she IS going to run for President in 2012 (and she has NO CHANCE of winning), it's too early. I know presidential campaigns last about three years in this country, but it's way too early to do something as drastic as she did just to show your dedication to running for office.

Third, if this truly had anything to do about being attacked by the media (has anyone else enjoyed watching Letterman give her the what for?), she should have been honest. I think it would have been received well in a state like Alaska if she'd have said that she was giving up her office to take care of her kids and grandchild.

Finally, I think the McCain camp's attacks on Palin, while probably valid, are completely unfair. She was a nobody governer in a state that most people in the lower 48 don't consider "one uh ourn" (for your Andy Griffith fans out there). She was totally unprepared for the national spotlight and wore out the "Washington outsider" bit about two weeks into the campaign. She was a desperation vanity pick to offset McCain's grumpy bah-humbug reputation. And it didn't work. In my opinion, it was mostly the McCain camp's fault.

Now, on to Emerson. I do think she took advantage of an unfortunate situation to gain some fame and power. I think she has a lot of people in Southeast Missouri pretty much duped. She has had a pretty consistent track record of not really representing her constituency or voting the way they think she does.

I won't make such a personal attack as to say that JoAnn Emerson hasn't worked hard in her years of public service. However, I'm not sure I know what kind of "fighter" mentality the gentleman in Rudi's blog is talking about. She was basically handed a Republican seat in an area that will never elect a Democrat...

Rudi: Just for your information, A.B.Stoddard

is a women. And a rather attractive one at that.

Don't care much for Emerson any more ... not sure Palin would do much better in being her 'understudy.'

The majority of Alaskans (evidenced by the polls) are disappointed in Palin, because she DID change after her VP candidacy. Before that time, she worked with members of both parties, and except for some little 'quirks,' the AK government was running along pretty smoothly. Not that all was 100% great, due to her propensity to use her political power against anyone, even friends, who disagreed with her, and her refusal to ever admit when she might have been wrong.

After the campaign, though ... she has alienated even many of her fellow Republicans in the private sector as well as in the political field. She has, in Alaskans' eyes at least, changed dramatically, both in personality and in her political stances.

Palin should ride on her dead husbands name into a position as a career politician / did I get that correct?

I agree JoAnn has voted time & again against the wishes of her constituency while purporting to vote as they wish....
