Purcell preparing coalition campaign committee

District 2 Cape Girardeau County Commissioner Jay Purcell is the only Republican official I saw at the SEMO Labor Picnic on Sunday, and he told me he'll be ready soon to announce a campaign committee that will cross party lines.

He didn't want to discuss the harsh comments against him by Cape Girardeau Mayor Jay Knudtson. But he did say he is in the process of forming a campaign committee that will include Republicans, Democrats and Independents. Purcell is being challenged by insurance broker Rock Finch, who is running as an Independent but reminds potential donors that he is really a Republican.

"My whole goal will be to take the politics out of county government," Purcell said.

Purcell was unopposed for re-election until Finch turned in petitions to gain a spot on the Nov. 4 ballot.
