I'm baaaaaacccccccckkkkkkk! I have re-entered the "wonderful world of blog" - this time without my husband, Jeff. Turns out he wasn't really a blogger. Too bad. So I'm shifting the theme from "two heads are better than one" to it being more of a discussion forum for social issues. Sound interesting??? It will be - I promise! I've learned - and am still learning - a great deal about life - and hope to learn from you too!
So - LIVE UNITED is the new United Way "call to action" It's not a campaign theme or just another nice slogan. It's a message to everyone to get involved - some way, some how! And there's a cool t-shirt - it's only five bucks. Visit our website at www.unitedwayofsemo.org to check it out then stop by 430A Broadway to pick one up! Here's the official definition of LIVE UNITED:
So what do you think? Is it to altruistic? Too pollyanna? (I've been called that before!) Or - is it about time. Can't wait to hear from you. Thanks! Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |
A native of St. Louis, Nancy lived in Cape for five years in the early 70's and moved back in 1995 with her family. Nancy graduated college from Belmont University in Nashville, TN with a B.S. in Business Administration. Back in Cape, she accepted the job of Executive Director at the United Way. Nancy's husband is a trainer at NARS and their children, Patrick, 21 (student at Mizzou), Jeremy 18 (student at Southeast) and Jenna, 13 (8th grader at Cape Jr. High), are the light of their lives. Another big part of her life is her faith, attending church at Westminster Presbyterian where she teaches Sunday School and works with the youth group.

Suggest it needs a serious dose of spell- and grammar-check -
peple - people?
Interdendent - interdependent?
Starting a sentence with 'and'? I can just see English teachers flipping out.
A mission statement cannot afford a less-than-perfect delivery. Errors of any kind - spelling, grammar, etc. - bring competencies and values into question. However, while a bit fluffy for my personal liking - it does state a condition, an action, and a desired result.
I find the official mission statement of United Way this year to be one of a lobby for social change instead of a charitable organization. I also question their stated stats which has evidently been removed from the paper. Perhaps you can tell us again?
The UNTIED WAY's WAR ON THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
I stopped giving to the UNITED WAY when they stopped national contributions to the Boy Scouts of America because of the BSA's policy of not, or, at least trying to hire homosexuals to tend to the boys as Scoutleaders. Call me old fashion, but there are plenty of homosexual perverts who work themselves into organizations like the Boy Scouts so that they can be near the young boys at about the time of puberty, when they are most confused about what is going on in their sexual development and susceptible Seems like a good policy to me for the BSA to try to prevent child abuse by not hiring homosexual leaders, but apparently the United Way, on the national level, feels that is discrimination. Also, the Boy Scouts encourage a devotion to God and Country. Perhaps the United Way, and some other radical groups, including some city governents oppose the Boy Scouts policy of showing reverence to God. Homosexuals have successfully forced Boy Scout troops from city owned property, for the Boy Scouts policy against hiring homosexuals as scout leaders. It makes it hard to embrace rights for homosexuals, when they are do damn nasty about harrassing the Boy Scouts.
A certain percentage, is it 10%, or, is it 16% of your United Way contribution goes to the National organization. Didn't want any of my contribution going to an organization that was battling the Boy Scouts of America.
I quit giving contributions to United Way back in the sixties. CEOs strut around and pledge this amount to them and then coerce their employees to have contributions taken out of their paychecks. Maybe it's a dirty little secret that employers mention your lack of contributions on their evaluations for a pay raise. What other charitable organization does take funds out of your paycheck?
This organziation coerces employers to pressure employees to give. If you really want to help a charity give to them directly, that way they get 100% of the money.
Robert, You're not old fashioned - just an ignorant redneck. I challenge you to find any supporting evidence for anything you have claimed - other than the Boy Scouts discriminate against homosexuals. Since there are no "national contributions" by United Way and the United Way of America provides no funding to any organization - you'll have a hard time supporting that backwaters bull that any funding was stopped. Looks like United Way here has funded the Boy Scouts for decades - how about you?
Where exactly are you coming up with this 10% or 16% fee?? I can't find anything on their site - but if they had to pay that for membership, and then run the organization - you'd be looking at 30% to 36% for operations. Get real.
Just because you are homophobic, don't ruin the reputation of others by making such outrageously false accusations that have no factual basis.
Oh, Johnny (stuart mills), Oh, Johnny, Oh.

Donors looking for new ways to give CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- More than $2 million -- that's what the United Way of the Central Carolinas has agreed to pay into the retirement plan of its chief executive officer.
The payments are spelled out in tax returns known as the IRS form 990, filed annually by non-profit agencies like the United Way and available to the public.
The returns show the local United Way agency has already paid more than $1 million into the employee benefit plan of CEO Gloria Pace King.
Board members tell WCNC they've committed to pay more than $1 million more over the next three years before King plans to retire.
It means United Way donors will literally have made Gloria Pace King a multi-millionaire through their contributions.
"The United Way of the Central Carolinas keeps 14.6 percent of the donation to cover administrative costs. The United Way donor form does not mention the fee. "

THERE IS BIG MONEY TO BE MADE IN ALLEGED..."NON-PROFITS" because there are suckers like us born every minute who will give, or, be forced to give by our employers.
-When is United Way's Days of Caring?
-Why was the date changed to piggy-back LaCroix's massive volunteer efforts without coordinating with their organizational leaders?
-What exactly is the leadership of United Way doing with regard to Days of Caring?
-Doesn't Volunteer Intergenerational Center (VIC) do much of the solicitation of volunteers and matches those volunteers with our communities needs?
-Why should individuals and businesses give monies to United way during this effort rather than other worthy causes?
