I don't know about you all but I think I've had enough of "reality" for a while. All these "Housewives" shows, where the women are not like any housewives I know; or people being on islands and kicked off islands is just nothing like my reality. Most people I know are too busy working, taking care of their families and trying to make ends meet to worry about what to wear to the next dinner party where someone yells at someone else, turns over a table, while a camera records their every move. This is reality? I am thinking if these folks had real jobs and worked hard every day they would be too tired for all this fighting, backstabbing, and bickering. But it isn't about that at all. It's about getting national exposure, getting other shows, contracts, etc. to earn money. Nothing is wrong with earning money I'm all for that but what are we gaining as a society from these shows?
And what about that shock radio? After the latest incident with Duchess Kate do you think we will learn our lesson and stay out of other people's business? Shock radio isn't funny. Pulling a "prank" is only done to raise ratings it certainly isn't designed to improve society. Sure I guess one could argue that laughter is good for society, but who is laughing now? This stuff has gone way beyond, "Smile, you're on Candid Camera".
There are way too many victims in this latest prank, namely a nurse who has died and her family who is left without her. The radio station has apologized and made a sizeable donation to the victim's family, the DJ's responsible have responded with regret, their program cancelled and a Google search finds over 30 reality shows still on the air...at least 30, I stopped counting after that.
What is your reality like? Does it look like the Kardashians' life? What draws us to these shows and these people? Is it escapism, infatuation, jealousy, or hype that great marketing people made us believe we had to see that causes us to watch? I don't know. But I do know that I am tired of these shows, these destructive and despicable radio pranks and so called shock and reality.
Trust me, what I deal with every day listening to what happens to sexual violence victims is truly shock and reality and it's anything but so called entertainment.
As we are in this most special time of year I wish only peace and happiness to victims everywhere. May their reality be one of comfort and joy, comfort and joy.
