  • My great-grandmother, Rosa Meystedt Hirsch, was first cousin to Henry Kiel (their mothers were sisters).

There were initially two distinct and separate Frederick Daues families in Cape: Frederick (married to Caroline, grandfather of Mayor Kiel) was the uncle of Frederick (married to Frances, father of Judge Charles Daues.)

Another Frederick, nicknamed "Fritz" (wife Henrietta) was the son of Frederick and Caroline Daues. Fritz and Henrietta lived next door to his sister, Johanna Meystedt, and her husband, Henry, at 218 S. Frederick St. Both of these couples are buried in New Lorimier Cemetery.

To further complicate matters, Frederick and Frances had a son, nicknamed "Fred."

While there have been other Frederick/Fred Daueses through the years, these four seem to cause the most confusion among area historians and genealogists.
