Puzzling out the Kiel/Daues connection
There are thousands and thousands of photographs, clippings and other material filed away in the Southeast Missourian's morgue. Although I've worked for the newspaper more than 30 years, I still find things that surprise me.
Recently, I stumbled upon this photo showing former St. Louis Mayor Henry W. Kiel (left) and Cape Girardeau native Charles H. Daues:
A quick search of our files turned up the story that went went the photo, published Oct. 24, 1935. It gives evidence to strong Kiel/Daues ties to Cape Girardeau:
The exact relationship between the two men isn't clear to me, because of conflicting statements in various newspaper stories. They appear to have been cousins, possibly sharing the same grandparents, Frederick and Caroline Daues.
A review of various records available to me shows what seems to be an inordinate number of Fredericks, Fritzs and Ferdinands in the Daues clan. Given enough time, I'll probably be able to un-knot this Gordian puzzle. For now, I'll leave you with obituaries for the men pictured above.
First Daues, who died in 1938:
And, finally, Kiel, who passed away in 1942:
