Gator hunting in Cape Girardeau

Much to the embarrassment of my family, I confess that one of my favorite television shows is "Swamp People," that History Channel program that features teams of hunters who brave poisonous snakes, spiders and other creepy things to hunt alligators. I watch it every week; I watch reruns of reruns. Yes, I am hooked (pun intended).
That's why this front-page photograph from Sept. 18, 1956, caught my eye:
The story of the gator's escape and capture appeared in the previous day's Southeast Missourian:
Alligator sightings, although rare, aren't unknown at Cape Girardeau. Here's a story from Oct. 27, 1952:
My favorite gator news, however, was a tiny item I found in 1922.
My father's family was from the Commerce, Mo., area. In fact, his brother's name was John. Makes me wonder...
