Fred Lynch retired in 2018 after capturing images for the Southeast Missourian since 1975, in that time moving from black-and-white to color, from film to digital and to video. The blog title is a nod to an earlier era of news photography and the 4x5 Speed Graphic: It's more important to be there for the shot than to worry about technical details.

We do not know who, what, when, where or why about this picture taken by G.D. Fronabarger.

The sign reads: "Keep out. Funny's drunk and his bullets are hot."

  • Judging by the woman's fashion, it most likely is during 1940s.

    Stones for steps and supports of porch, concrete pillisters to support the house. Is that a Kerosene stove sitting on the porch? Looks like maybe a chicken coop in the background on the left. Location must be out in the county back of beyond. Doubt house is located in fashionable part of Cape.

    What was it, some sort of tourist attraction or the model for Lle Abner's home in Dogpatch?

  • chas111, did any of the family oil barons head west? There's a BIG local chain in Las Vegas named Terrible Herbst.

    Las Vegas has other connections to CG; Chic Hecht, former Nevada US senator, then Ambassador to the Bahamas. Tough job.

  • Looks like they threw on coats with aprons still on. Given the location of the west facing house in middle of winter, I'll guess they were frying fish that was cleaned on the table on the porch. Those bulletts may have been hush puppies. Or G.D. may have brought the sign for a joke.

  • This was a store in Smelterville that my mother-in-law has told me about. The man's name is Audrey L. Farrell but everyone called him Funny.He put the sign up to warn everyone that when he was drunk, he would shoot anyone that tried to rob him.
