J.T. and Lessie Nelson owned and operated the People’s Cafe from 1956 to 1990 at 402 Good Hope St. in Cape Girardeau. The People's Cafe was a soul food restaurant that attracted some famous clientele during those times, such as Duke Ellington and the Harlem Globetrotters. The building was razed in 2005.
