J.T. and Lessie Nelson owned and operated the People’s Cafe from 1956 to 1990 at 402 Good Hope St. in Cape Girardeau. The People's Cafe was a soul food restaurant that attracted some famous clientele during those times, such as Duke Ellington and the Harlem Globetrotters. The building was razed in 2005.

Published April 22, 1990. J.T. Nelson, right, and his wife, Lessie Nelson, owners of the People's Cafe in Cape Girardeau, were guests of honor during a special banquet held at the restaurant.
