Broadway traffic hot spot in 1947

In June 1947, the Missouri State Highway Department used automatic counters to measure vehicular traffic at several street intersections in Cape Girardeau. The most cars counted was on Broadway just west of Sprigg street with an average of 10,499 cars in a 24-hour period and an average of 1,060 cars an hour at the peak period starting at 4:15 p.m. The second-highest traffic count was on Broadway between Fountain and Lorimier streets with an average of 7,324 cars in a 24-hour period.

Third heaviest traffic was recorded on West Broadway east of Clark avenue with an average of 6,467 cars. Fourth-highest was Main street south of Broadway with 6,258 vehicles. On Sprigg street just south of Broadway was the fifth heaviest traffic with 5,601 cars per day.
