Balmy weather brings out the energy in youngsters. These pupils at Franklin School, Thursday, keep the swings going during the play periods, while hundreds of others busy themselves on the school grounds in various games. (G.D. Fronabarger photos)

At Franklin School, a game of hop-scotch goes along with the first appearance of spring and temperatures in the 70s. Here, from the left, Madeline Graham, Linda McDowell and Patricia Goodman engage in the school-ground pastime as Brad Wilson looks on from the background.

The old playground area is now a parking lot in front of the new school building. The original building opened in 1927. Its cost was $179, 611. [With inflation, about $2.4 million today.] The new $10 million building opened in 2012.

  • Notice how things have changed. In the old picture, kids played in an open playground with some of the kids standing right by the street. At the new school, they play in an area that looks like a zoo with a tall fence all the way around it.

  • Back in then days girls had to wear dress's to school. At Jefferson, in winter you could wear long pants under the skirts to get to school. Then remove them before class. School did not shut down so quickly for snow days. Standing at the bus stop in freezing weather was not fun.
