Floodwall openings 1959

Posted Wednesday, October 1, 2014, at 12:00 AM

July 14, 1959 Southeast Missourian

Site of the two openings in the Main Street floodwall

Broadway, above, and Themis Street, below, are shown here in a riverside view. Each of the openings will be identical in size, 18 feet wide. But the height at Themis will be 17 feet 7 9/16ths inches and at Broadway, 15 feet 6 1/8th inches. Neither opening shown here is completed. Steel is in place for the remaining wall section at Themis and the steel for the foundation of the one at Broadway is ready. It is expected the concrete work will be completed in about a month. Steel gates with rubber seals at bottom and sides, will hang from the openings, ready to swing shut to close off Main Street in event of high water.
