Energy Coal Co.

Energy Coal Co. is seen on William street just west of the railroad track running along Indian Park in Cape Girardeau in this undated, possibly 1950s photo by G.D. Fronabarger. The railroad spur was off the old Cape Girardeau Northern track, later the Missouri Pacific; the same track that wound its way out Independence Street and on across Kingshighway and through Arena Park on its way to Jackson and ultimately the river bottoms east of Perryville. [Thanks to Keith Robinson]

This aerial view shows the Energy Coal Co. property next to William street. The trees in the upper right corner are part of Happy Hollow.

This advertisement appeared in the Oct. 15, 1934 Southeast Missourian. Mine No. 5 was located in the vicinity of Herrin, Ill.

Warning

Coal dealers here have blood in their eyes.

The retail coal dealer of Cape Girardeau, who last year organized a Credit Bureau among themselves, so as to better their collections and credits, are going to weed out the slow and careless pay. They have gone on record that they will no longer finance anyone for his winter supply of fuel.

The coal dealer is obliged to pay the cash for the coal, freight and labor, in turn accepted his customers credit which he failed to keep good, so credit will be very, very limited and to those only who appreciated the courtesy extended. It may create quite a bit of hardship during the long cold winter months when fuel is so sadly needed with those who have abused their credit, as no fuel will be delivered other than for CASH ONLY.

On July 3rd, 1930, ALL ACCOUNTS 60 days past due, will be compiled by an auditor from each of the coal companies' books and a copy thereof furnished each coal dealer.

It is not the intent to create or cause anyone any hardship, but we MUST have better consideration for the courtesies extended. Therefore unless you call and settle your account on or before July 3rd, 1930, and we are allowing you ample time to provide for the necessary funds, your future purchases will be for CASH only, as no further credit will be extended to you.

Remember the final date is JULY 3rd, 1930.

Police say attempts to break into three safes in Cape Girardeau businesses were made overnight; although they failed in each instance, burglars badly damaged safes in their enthusiastic, but crude, efforts; attempts were made at Pollack Hide & Fur Co., West Independence Street, where two safes were damaged, and at Energy Coal Co., 410 William.
