Caruthers Avenue concreted

Posted Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at 12:00 AM

This picture shows Caruthers Avenue being improved with concrete in the 1950s. The view is looking north with Cape Girardeau Catholic High School in the background. The school opened in 1954 and was renamed Notre Dame High School in 1960. (G.D. Fronabarger photo)

  • I have always been intrigued as to why Caruthers was built to be so wide between Broadway and Independence. Wonder what the future plans were, if any?

My guess is the wide street was made for the new Central High School that opened on Caruthers about 1954.
