Fred Lynch retired in 2018 after capturing images for the Southeast Missourian since 1975, in that time moving from black-and-white to color, from film to digital and to video. The blog title is a nod to an earlier era of news photography and the 4x5 Speed Graphic: It's more important to be there for the shot than to worry about technical details.

Hmmmm, Mapquest puts this at the former Rhodes bait shop convenience mart, across from the now Houch's Donuts.

I vaguely remember the sign - but what I most remember about that location was the two Gulf service stations side by side, wondering how did that work?

It was behind Food Giant, yes, probably where Fireplace Center is. The ice cream was great; a very custardy flavor; only one kind of ice cream machine made it; the only other machines I am aware of were in Campbell, MO (by the overpass) and Paragould, Ark. Yummy.

My father often picked me up from Franklin School for lunch at Dari-Castle. My addiction to their pork fritter sandwiches, curly fries that looked like miniature bed springs, and root beer freezes remains with me, to this day.
