Fred Lynch retired in 2018 after capturing images for the Southeast Missourian since 1975, in that time moving from black-and-white to color, from film to digital and to video. The blog title is a nod to an earlier era of news photography and the 4x5 Speed Graphic: It's more important to be there for the shot than to worry about technical details.

Beard's Sports Shop, Wayne's Grill

Beard's Sports Shop, 818 Broadway, and Wayne's Grill, 816 Broadway, are shown in this picture taken by G.D. Fronabarger in December, 1961.

Nearby buildings are the Esquire Theatre, 824 Broadway, and Southwestern Bell on the corner. Hartford Hill operated a gift shop at 814 Broadway next to Wayne's Grill.

Southwestern Bell would expand the building in 1964.

Prior to the building expansion, Wayne's Grill moved to the former Mrs. Miller's Cafe, 828 Broadway, next to the Pla-Mor.

Beard's Sports Shop moved across the street to 811 Broadway, according to a 1965 city directory.

The Martha Washington Candy and Ice Cream Shop is listed at 818 Broadway in the 1967 city directory. It apparently changed its name. From 1968 to 1973 it is listed as Martha's Colonial Candy and Ice Cream Shop.

The 1974 directory lists Weber TV & Appliance. That business filled the building into the new century.

Grace Cafe occupied the building later until it closed in late 2008.

In 2020, the building is Broadway Biergarten.

I went to lunch at Wayne's Grill almost every day when I reached the upper grades at Trinity Lutheran School. I don't know how I managed to talk my parents into giving me permission to leave the school grounds, but I was glad I did.

I believe a burger and a Coke cost about 35 cents. Fries were another 15 cents; wonderful coconut cream pie was about a quarter.

My lunch breaks would probably include stopping off at Beard's to ogle new fishing gear. They almost certainly would include a visit to Vandeven's for some candy.

When I was working for The Missourian, I'd celebrate my Saturday $50 paycheck by cashing it and going to Wayne's Grill for a filet mignon that cost, if I remember correctly, $1.25. It's the steak against which I judge all other steaks.

Thank you Mr.Lynch for the answer. Any chance you have any old photos of the Country Store and Sunny Hill Hotel on West End? It use to be a treat to go to the dairy bar for ice cream, then brouse the Country Store.

The fish sign is gone and it was called Grace Cafe in 2009, but the decorative trim is still on the building.
