Sick Dog
Yesterday I inadvertently made my dog sick. Without thinking, I dusted some spices off of my counter top onto the kitchen floor. Several hours later I had a dog trying, unsuccessfully, to throw up for forty-five minutes non-stop. To make a long story short, my vet was kind enough to see him. Now, after a couple of shots and the oral medication I am giving him, he is getting better. I didn't figure out what must have made him sick until late last night. I immediately swept my kitchen floor clean, but by then it was too late.
Now, I will be more careful about what I deposit on my kitchen floor. All of this made me think about how something relatively harmless, alcohol, became a problem for me. My "vet visit" was my introduction to AA's twelve steps. If my dog, with my help, follows the advice and prescription given by my vet, he will continue to get better. If I follow the prescription contained in AA's steps, I will continue to stay in recovery and to grow spiritually.
One of the things that almost broke my heart yesterday is how my dog has such blind trust in me. He doesn't fight me when I give him his medication, and he was cooperative at the vet's office yesterday too. I think my dog would follow me anywhere and do anything for me. That is the kind of blind trust and love I need to have for my Higher Power. When I can surrender my "self-will" to God's love and direction, I also will continue to "get better."
