Cape Girardeau Hollywood Video closes

Hollywood Video at 127 Siemers Drive has closed.

An employee at the store told me the store's last day of business was Wednesday. Customers can still visit the store of the parent company, Movie Gallery, 2009 E. Jackson Boulevard in Jackson. I've placed a call to the Movie Gallery hotline but haven't heard back yet.

Bloomberg.com reported that since Sept. 1 Movie Gallery has closed 250 of its stores. Another 200 could close by the end of the year, because of past due rent, company Chief Marketing Officer Clifford Torng told Bloomberg.

This is the second video rental store to close in 2009. Earlier this year Blockbuster Video in Jackson shut its doors Feb. 13.

The video rental industry seems to have a tough go of things lately, thanks to mail-delivery companies like Netflix.

I think Redbox also has hurt them. You can't beat $1 a night rental. I just wish we had more than 1 in Cape.

But redbox has such a limited selection, thats its main downfall. Also if we do the math... a 5 day rental was less than 5 dollars=less than a dollar a day. What I will miss is Game Crazy

We've only got one Redbox in Cape, but don't forget the MovieCube inside Schnucks. Same concept and price.

Netflix doesn't rent video games.

Brian Blackwell's response:
FriendO, you are correct. I must have had video games on my mind and inserted the word "game" in that last sentence.

Netflix doesn't do video games but plenty of other places do like GameFly and Blockbusters mail rental service. Add to that things like Steam & growing online game sales/rentals via PS3 and Xbox and the neighborhood game stores will be the next to start dying off.

As an aside most of my movie watching these days is via Netflix digital distribution through my Xbox 360 (PS3 compatibility is coming in Nov). Being able to stream 15,000+ movies to my TV anytime without getting off my couch makes RedBox or any video store archaic. Hopefully in another year or two the digital distribution offerings will be strong enough to completely replace any need for cable/satellite service.

Ego

You will find them in the front of Walmart. They are the big red box.

I agree with previous posts concerning Redbox and Netflix. To me they are the nails in the coffin for business's like this. Ever since we joined Netflix we have not had to rent exept one time when my brother in law and I rented from Redbox. With netflix I like the fact that you can stream movies on your computer or tv and NO LATE FEE'S.
