More activity on North Kingshighway; facelifts for one Cape Girardeau motel

With all the gloom and doom reported about businesses closing and laying off workers one area on North Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau seems to be bucking the trend. Broker Sandy Helwege of Coldwell Banker Abernathy Realty e-mailed me over the weekend with some interesting news about several of her properties between Casa Mexicana and Sonic.

As reported in Monday's Business Buzz, Subway is expected to open today at 1812 Carondalet Ave., Suite 103. LA Weight Loss will occupy the vacant space between the sandwich shop and Beef O'Brady's, a family sports pub that opened last fall. Helwege said that Casa Mexicana has a long-term lease, which is good news for patrons of the restaurant.

Near that shopping center Pizza Hut has purchased a 1-acre lot from Helwege and her husband, Gary, for the purpose of building their own free standing building. Helwege said the owners promised them that the restaurant would be up and running by spring 2010.

Super 8 renovations

If you've driven by Super 8 Motel lately you may have noticed the hotel at 2011 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau is receiving a minor facelift. A crew began replacing the hotel's sign Monday. Additional renovations inside the building include a new tile. Last year Super 8's parking lot was repaved.

With all the restaurants either in that complex or soon to open I would think LA Weight Loss could do a great business there.

Glad to hear Pizza Hut is moving forward on their plans to open a new free standing building. It will be a welcome change!!!! Thanks.

can cape ever get an IHOP we need one

Wouldn't mind an IHOP, but I must caution you that they are pretty expensive compared to what we have in town already. Ate at one in Peoria a few weeks ago and it was good, but not worth the price we paid. 35+ bucks for me, my wife and daughter to have breakfast.

At one time the guy who owns the franchise rights in Paducah was looking for a spot here in Cape, but then the yearly minimum wage joke was passed and his searched pretty much ended. Got to be too expensive to do business in MO compared to KY. He also has/had the rights to the franchise in IL and was looking in Carbondale/Marion, but IL is worse than MO when it comes to business expenses. And from what I've heard from my sources in Paducah, the restaurant there isn't doing very well any more. Things may have changed and I'm not speaking for IHOP, but I think the idea of one coming to Cape anytime soon is dead.

Cubby,

Peoria's my old town! How was things?

I agree with the comment about pizza hut, The free standing place they have now is going down hill fast. I really woldn't have such a problem paying the price to go out and eat more often BUT it seems that the resturants we have here are letting their buidlings go and no one wants to eat in filth.

Cubby! I am astonished. Say it isn't so....businesses might choose NOT to locate in Missouri because of our stupid minimum wage laws?

There should be a law against that! Damn greedy businesses. The only reason they should exist is to supply an undeserving person with a six figure salary.

Darn capitalists! Off with their heads!

Gee, great choice we leave businesses--People's Republic of Illinois, Overtaxed Missouri, or Podunk KY.

We are increasingly becoming antibusiness as a state & as a nation. Does no one realize that businesses don't pay taxes? They count them as an expense and pass them along to the customer--which is YOU! Cut business taxes, their costs go down, their prices go down, they do more business, they hire more people. Those employees pay income tax & those customers pay income tax on increased sales; total tax revenue goes up. Darn those evil business owners!

That's why I'm a business manager and not a business owner --- I'm not the evil one!!!!

...and I have no problem being an undeserving person if you want to throw a six figure salary my way. You know where to find me cycle rider............

So, you're saying you don't have the marbles to go out on your own, but you'll take the bonuses of those who will...

Hmmmm....

If you're giving the money out, my hand has no problem being first in line. I've worked hard enough in my life that I have no problem getting a little extra from those who are willing to spread the wealth.

....and yes I have marbles to go out on my own, but not in this financial nightmare we're in right now. But on the other hand, I have no problem running the business for somebody who wants to go out on their own right now. Just give me a nice six figure salary and I'll do what you want. You can be the puppet master and I'll be your puppet.

So does that mean I have to stick my hand up your...?

LOL, leave it to you to take this blog into the ethical and moral arena of the Speakout blog. I guess you are living up to the standards of your avatar, huh?
