You can hold on to Nothing

Jack attempted to hold on to his former school. He was a sixth grader and was making failing grades, predominantly, there. Nevertheless, he wanted to hang on because his friends were there and because he was comfortable in the environment.
Jack's parents tried to reason with him, telling him he would be more successful at another school, where more special education help was available. Yet the fear of leaving the familiar and starting again with different people and lessons frightened him. He had acquired what I would call, with my psychology background, learned helplessness. He was used to failing and he had already acquired that mentality.
Why try at another place?¡¨ he reasoned. He was possibly afraid he would fail there, too, and then where would he be? Regardless, Jack's parents forced him to change to another school. He is still just beginning there, now and we shall see what the outcome is. Regardless, Jack is attempting to change because of the necessity of the situation.
Everybody encounters experiences, in his life, when he can't figure out what to do. Sometimes, you too, acquire, learned helplessness. You would rather put up with abuse, or failure than take a stand and make a change. When this happens you must step back and look at your options. Children lack the expertise to do this, but adults can weigh the pros and cons and make a decision. But first, you have to decide to make a change. Step out into the unknown and see what happens. For as you know, life truly is, constant change.
What is the most difficult change or decision you have had to make during your lifetime? How did you make your decision. My next blog will contain ways to discern.
Take care and God Bless,
