Christmas Anxieties
As many of us anxiously struggle to finish the shopping, the baking, the wrapping and the decorating, others are experiencing a different kind of anxiety this Christmas season. Ms. D has had a difficult year with her health, battling breast cancer and beating it! This feat does not come without a price, emotionally and financially. A new recipient of the Toybox project, Ms. D has found this experience humbling, stating that "You never know when your circumstances can flip. It can happen in an instance."
With medical bills piling up, Christmas is particularly challenging for her and her children. She had to quit her job to care for her health and her husband is employed in an entry level position with good benefits but poor pay. They are raising two children and hope to bring them joy this holiday season after a turbulent year. "Jack," age 10 would like a Nerf Vortex gun, legos, and a flag football set. "Cindy," age 6, says that she just wants "mommy to feel good" but added a baby alive or Disney Princess CD player. As we hustle to make our holiday deadlines, keep Ms. D and her kids in mind.
With less than two and a half weeks to go in the Christmas for the Elderly and Toybox Drive, we need the support of the community now more than ever! Area organizations, such as the River City Rodders, Cape Girardeau Roller Girls, Central Junior High School and Middle School, Alma Schrader, and Notre Dame Regional High School, have made Toybox a priority in their holiday giving. I challenge you to get involved with "casual dress" days, toy drives, and other fundraisers to help in our efforts to bring Christmas joy to the very young and old in our community.
Toybox needs include: Toys for babies, age 1-3, including blocks, learning toys, infant safe baby dolls and trucks; Toys for our older children: including Nerf, craft sets, legos, music players, hand-held or TV games, and fashion or jewelry sets
Christmas for the Elderly needs: Gift cards to Walmart or Grocery stores for prescriptions and basic living needs, toilet paper and tissue, toiletries such as deoderant, shampoo and conditioner, and toothpaste, pillows and bedding, cleaning supplies like Clorox Wipes and Swiffers, coffee and coffee makers, pet food and supplies, and warm pajamas and/or robes in all sizes.
Your continued support is appreciated! Thank you for being a part of our Christmas Tradition.
