That would have to be "Ten Little Indians" by Agatha Christie. It was later on printed as "And Then There Were None...."
In my home town we had a little used-book store that my mother would go to every once in a great while. She had given books to them before, so she had credit there to buy other books. I was looking around in the mystery section as usual, when I spied an Agatha Christie book. I pulled a stool over to pull the book off the high shelf, and took it home, my mom getting another Stephen King novel. I got home and started reading the little paper back book with the hangman's noose on the cover. About 4 hours later- I was still there, with my mom yelling at me to eat. "No thanks mom! I'm reading!" The book begins by introducing you to the "ten little Indians" that will be the stars of the book. All of them have received a letter asking them to come to a remote island for a vacation, which they gladly accept. They meet one by one in the house and the mystery begins. One by one characters die, and each time one does, a little glass Indian figurine from the kitchen is broken or goes missing. A rush ensues to find out where the killer is hiding. When everyone finally realizes there's no one left on the island but themselves, groups form, blame begins, and people continue to die. By the end of the novel, everyone is assumed dead, and you're left wondering "Who dun' it?" Luckily, Christie leaves a little epilogue to explain just that. I'd give "And Then There Were None..." a ten out of ten for a mystery novel by the queen of mystery herself. Make sure you have snacks and a cuddly blanket when you begin- you won't want to move until you finish. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |
