In 2012 the legislators representing the citizens of Ohio voted in both the House and the Senate to repeal the breed specific statewide law designating Pit Bulls as vicious. This law had been in effect for 26 years and had proven it had no effect in protecting Ohio's communities in the matter of irresponsible owners. ...

Statistics
Posted Saturday, August 23, at 7:14 AM

Statistics are a method of collecting data which is used in every aspect of our lives. Without going into the very fine details of the two categories of statistics this is a method used to either demonstrate qualities present in a very select sampling or they can also be used to predict possibilities in a broad range of subjects. ...

Being Human
Posted Saturday, August 16, at 11:31 AM

The human condition is a descriptive phase which has received much attention over the years from scholars and theologians. It is described as the "hardwired" traits inherent in being a human being. The road through life itself has been presented as beginning in ignorance and proceeding to gain knowledge as we grow and learn. This condition is by no means perfect but it is our lot as humans...

Another Step Forward
Posted Sunday, August 10, at 8:48 AM

On July 31 2014 the State of Delaware took a step toward seeing sanity lay the foundation for their state laws. The governor signed into law legislation that would end the practice of dogs confiscated due to fighting being killed simply for having the misfortune of ending up in the hands of the human monster. This may seem to be common sense logic but in the matter of all things Pit Bull, common sense rarely wins...

The Wasted Vote
Posted Sunday, August 3, at 9:23 AM

On August 5, 2014 Missouri's primary election polling places will open at 6:00am. Primary elections tend to be ignored by the average voter which is a leading cause of our citizens ending up in a "lesser of two evils" scenario when it comes time to elect our legislators. The primaries are critical to insure the true legislators take their seats and the politicians stay out of the process which effects our daily lives whether we consider ourselves "political" or not...

The Future-Karsyn Connell
Posted Saturday, July 26, at 6:31 AM

We live in a time where it seems the only young people we hear about or see are the ones considering themselves entitled, who lack any moral center and seem to have a problem with keeping their pants up. Like all things negative it is easy to have our focus deterred from those who represent all things good and possible for the future...

Warriors-The Dragon Slayers

I have a confession; I am a huge fan of the Pixar movies. There it is out and I feel better for it. The relevance this has to this week's entry is in regards to the movie How To Train Your Dragon. Martin recently gave me this dvd partly because he knew I would love it and partly because of the relevance in the story. The message in these films is something which knows no age limit...

Strength-Ledy VanKavage

My first communication with Ledy VanKavage came when I was called by the PAWS group to address Perryville's consideration of banning Pit Bull ownership way back in 2008. Ledy offered some excellent advice but while it may have been effective in larger metro areas experience has taught me it does not work in southeast Missouri. ...

I have done a number of entries on the group I Am Pit Bull Strong mentioning Rochelle Steffen. This is a "movement" born from the struggles of a puppy whose life is the very definition of the battle faced by Pit Bulls. Mac the Pit Bull started life with three strikes. ...

Soul-The Soldiers
Posted Friday, June 27, at 5:37 AM

In every war you find the soldiers and in the case of the fight for the American Pit Bull Terrier this is very much a war with very real life and death consequences. Thanks to the age of electronic networking the rescue, shelter and legislative fronts have come together in this war capable of sharing information on a massive scale. ...

Courage-Bless the Bullys
Posted Saturday, June 21, at 8:21 AM

John Wayne is quoted as having said "Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway". In the world of the American Pit Bull Terrier courage is one of the most important qualities needed by an effective advocate and fancier. Like most of us, Jodi Preis knows exactly when her life was changed and she was set upon the path of advocacy that would lead her in a direction she may have never anticipated. ...

Tenacity-Hearts of Gold
Posted Sunday, June 15, at 7:35 AM

Memphis has long been a sort of hell for the American Pit Bull Terrier. The stories of the horror this breed has faced at the hands of the human monster number almost as many as the numbers of dogs pouring into the rescue/shelter system. The horrors have also originated within the sheltering system itself which has made the fight to save the breed monumental...

Human nature being what it is we tend to focus on the negative and allow the positives to remain in the background. It is not so much that it is not important and in fact is more important, I think positive is something we tend to take for granted. We know there are bad rescues and shelters out there but I would like to take advantage of this media outlet to share the excellent organizations who do not receive enough recognition...

Profiting From Emotion

This week saw a different kind of precedent set in the world of animal sheltering/rescue. Former director of the Boggs Mountain Humane Shelter in Clayton Georgia, Lowanda "Peanut" Kilby was found guilty of 60 counts of theft and racketeering. The charges, subsequent prosecution and conviction came after an investigation into the shelter's Lucky Dog/Lucky Kitty program. ...

Hope Dies in 2014

Missouri's 2014 Legislative Session ended May 16, 2014 at 6:00pm. With this close came the end of hope for legislation addressing the practice of holding dogs responsible for the irresponsibility of humans. Stupidity is a Social Disease
Posted Saturday, May 10, at 8:19 AM

I have stayed quiet for the past few months with something of a superstitious notion that if I held onto the faith in my fellow human beings the possibility of sanity ruling in Missouri would come to pass. I am of course talking about pending legislation in both the Missouri House of Representatives and Senate that would effectively eliminate the practice of holding a dog breed responsible for the sins of humans. ...

I have done entries mentioning the legacy the true fanciers of the American Pit Bull Terrier have been charged with preserving. Someone very dear to me who I came to know because of our love of this breed shared this video with me. The music is fitting because it invokes the very emotions I feel when confronted with the ignorance surrounding the dogs I so love. ...
