Lightening CrashesPosted Saturday, May 12, at 7:35 AM With the fall of Breed Specific Legislation from around the world, a new phenomenon is emerging. This is the unprecedented reporting of acts of heroism and positive press surrounding what has become the most hated breed, the American Pit Bull Terrier...
I have no doubt that the mere implication that I may be rendered speechless is enough to make some who know me read this post. Well, the events in our capitol cities, major counties and even some of Missouri's smallest towns, has caused me to have little to add...
This is the link to one of the most comprehensive repeals of Breed Specific Legislation in the United States at this time. http://stopbsl.com/2012/02/21/ohio-hb-14-signed-by-governor/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+StopBsl+%28Stop+BSL%29...
This is a question that seems to keep popping up. I had assumed that even without extensive press coverage most dog lovers in this area were aware that Southeast Correctional Center in Charleston Missouri is a participant in the Missouri Department of Corrections Puppies for Parole program. I further assumed because it is an almost obsessive topic of conversation for me everyone knew about these dogs. Forgive my attack of ego.......
This week I am sharing links to some of the most precedent setting legislation happening in this country. The trend toward repealing breed specific legislation is alive and well, at the state, county and local level. There is a storm brewing and the wind is picking up!...
Axl has long been one of my favorite Pit Bulls. I have given updates on his progress throughout the years but this week I was sent the accompanying photo of him that made the reality of his ability even more dramatic. For anyone that is not familiar with Axl, he came to me from the Caruthersville Humane Society after being seized during a drug raid. ...
With the decision by the New Mexico governor not to sign into law a statewide ban on the ownership of Pit Bulls comes another example of sanity ruling in the ban on breed specific legislation. This decision follows on the heels of the possible repeal of the Dangerous Dog law which has stood since 1991 in Great Britain and the impending repeal of the automatic vicious designation of Pit Bulls in Ohio...
There is one breed of dog that inspires the same fear and aversion that the American Pit Bull Terrier does and that is the dreaded Jack Russell Terrier aka Parson Russell Terrier. I have had to face a startling reality this week. I am a closet JRT fancier with the potential to be a hoarder. Yes, it is true, I love these little freaks...
A new year is upon us with more promise of change than in years past. The close of 2011 has brought with it many animal welfare issues that have gained a momentum of their own. Here in Missouri we have had the barbaric practice of killing animals in gas chambers hammered home. ...
Christmas is a time that inspires a certain kinship among believers and non-believers alike. This is a time when emotions run high and we embrace what is important in our lives. This Christmas Pit Bull fanciers are thankful for such miracles as the abolishment of breed specific legislation in areas historically set on the destruction of a dog for the sins of man, the survival of dogs like Patrick, thrown out as so much garbage and the depth of love we feel for our canine companions. ...
One of the biggest obstacles I face in working with dogs and their owners is the humanization of pets. I am as guilty as any in considering my dogs to be my children but I do not allow myself to humanize their behavior. To do so is to invite disaster and this can lead to tragedy on so many levels...
At last, it has been said and it was said right here in the Show Me state of Missouri. Let's not just automatically designate ALL Pit Bulls as vicious, let's go after everything over 100 pounds. This sentiment was voiced on December 5, 2011 at the second reading of proposed ordinances being considered by the city council of Slater Missouri. ...
I was asked a very valid question last week in one of the comments left on my latest entry: Why don't they just breed the "gameness" out of Pit Bulls? I gave a quick answer to the question but for anyone else that may wonder the same thing; I am going to give a hint: American Pit Bull TERRIER, American Staffordshire TERRIER. ...
OMGosh....I am not the only person out there that knows what the true American Pit Bull Terrier is all about! For too long the Pit fanciers have been segregated into small pockets across this country and the world. Thanks to the magic of modern technology, this is no longer the case. We are leaving our imposed exile and beginning to come together as nothing less than an army of dog lovers sick of the nonsense...
In the world of Pit Bulls there seems to be little time to just kick back and enjoy our dogs. With all the hardship, facing Pit fanciers it is easy to lose sight of what it is like to be girls enjoying our dogs. This week, the women Pit fanciers are shaking off the gloom and doom mentality and we are taking a break...
It is official, as of November 13, I have had Pit Bulls for 32 years. Scary that I would know the exact date the first Pit Bull came into my life but it says something for the profound effect this event had on my life. At the time, I had no idea the chain of events this acquisition would unleash...
To many people outside of the Pit Bull world it is all too easy to put all Pit fanciers into a stereotypical mold. The term "Pit Bull" automatically brings to mind individuals living on the fringe. This is an image that has been developed by media that has done nothing to actually meet the true Pit Bull fanciers...
When I first moved back to this area I came fresh from a fight to save the lives of the dogs I love. At that time I had two Pit Bulls, Sugar and Bubba. Sugar was my first show/obedience dog and Bubba was a dog I had bottled raised from the time he was four days old. To say they meant something to me would be a gross understatement. In the case of Bubba, he was not only one of the most beautiful dogs I have ever had in the show ring; he was also the most amazing therapy dog I have ever owned...
Presentation is defined as to make known or introduce. Each time Pit Bull owners take their dogs into public they are in essence presenting this breed. How that dog is presented to society has become the single most important weapon we have in changing public perception and changing the public perception is our only hope of stopping the movement to eliminate our breed...
This is going to be one of the last non-Pit Bull entries for this blogger. One of the greatest dogs I have ever had the pleasure to spend time with is going on to his forever home. Windsor has been the subject of a couple of past entries. His spirit is indomitable and every life he has touched has been enriched. ...

Melanie Coy has been a pit bull fancier for 29 years. She's also been involved in obedience and other training and showing animals. Coy became involved in animal legislative issues in the mid-80s to dispel myths about the pit bull breed and fight against breed-specific laws. She advocates responsible dog ownership through training and educational programs, and helps shelters make dogs more adoptable.
