Dodging Drool, a Not so new Blog
I hope you enjoy the change in title of this blog, from "Perspective on Pets" to "Dodging Drool." The change reflects more of which I truly blog than my original intent, which was to include guest bloggers with different perspectives on pet species, whether cats or reptiles or horses, etc. This never materialized and because I focus mainly on dogs with strong support for rescue dogs AND because my second to last adopted dog is a Bloodhound, "Dodging Drool" sounds very pertinent to how I live and what I have to share - mostly hounds, a few foster dogs, and the Sanctuary dogs who won't be adopted (one is still very adoptable to a one dog home).
My rescue, Silverwalk Hounds, is no longer rescuing. I outline the reasons HERE. The transition isn't easy; there are so many who need help. As noted above, there are still Sanctuary dogs who will remain for life: Shiloh, Monk, and Minnie. I'm hoping Archie the Tyrant finds a home. He needs to be an only dog so he and his family will be happy. Until he does, Archie is here, returned from his foster home due to medical issues in their family, not with Archie.
Archie (L) with Rosie
Sunday, Archie was sitting next to my last and final (for awhile) adopted dog, Rosie the Rat Terrier. I noticed him shivering and remembered his foster mom mentioned the same thing, but she noticed it more before meals than at any time like I saw it.
I was on a mission yesterday evening to FINALLY get a new dog door flap bought and put in. BTW, if anyone in town stocks dog door replacement flaps, please let me know. Petco did a few years ago when I bought my last one but no longer so I bought an entirely new door. This is not as unreasonable as it sounds - I'm considering putting a second dog door in my back door so the dogs enter and exit the back door to the breezeway, then the breezeway door to the back yard.
As I wandered around (and I always do in pet stores, book shops, hardware stores, tack shops, Target, and office supply stores), I found a coat to fit Archie. Surprisingly, I didn't have one in his size at home; larger ones and one too small but not "just right." It was on super duper sale so I snagged it. His brother Squishy Beagle smelled him up and down but Archie seems to like it. Hooray!

I didn't get the right door. Mine is aluminum; the one I bought is plastic. However, after some finagling and enjoying using my iPhone as a modern day Swiss Army Knife (sort of - the flashlight was SO handy), the new flap is hung despite multiple interruptions by dogs who just had to go through the door or lack thereof while I was working on it. Though I knew I needed a new flap for weeks, I wait till the day of a predicted snowstorm to get one. Sigh.
Speaking of snowstorms and Target, I got some gloves and socks on sale as well as a Dirt Devil hand held vacuum. I was dazzled by the lower price since I really need a crevice tool but I can tell you - it did the job on a futon full of Bloodhound dog fur. One of my upcoming entries will address cleaning equipment for dog homes. Right now, the best for me is a broom and dust pan, next a mop, bucket with water and vinegar, followed by Shark steam cleaning. Smells so good!
Bring your pets inside in this frigid weather or be sure they are well supplied with insulated houses and barns with flowing water. Keep warm and I'll see you next week. Thank you for joining me in dodging drool....
