Protect Your Pets!
It's cold, people. COLD; will be getting WET and WINDY. By LAW, you must offer proper shelter, food, and potable (that means, not frozen AND clean) water to your animals. Even OUTSIDE dogs will suffer over the next week; bring them inside.
BRING THEM INSIDE - to a WARM garage/basement (those small heaters work well), with lots of bedding (straw, hay, blankets), and extra feed; it takes a lot of energy to stay warm, even in much improved conditions.
We can all clean poop and pee later. What we need to do, not only by law but by our hearts and simple moral compass, is to ensure the safely of our animals in this drastic weather. I grew up in this - MN, SD, and MT. Our pets were always inside. My horse always had a good stall with plenty of bedding (not straw - sigh - he ate it...)
However, in the weather coming and the weather we've already had (you did read about the underfed boxer left outside w/minimal shelter who froze to death earlier this year?), outside animals are greatly AT RISK.
I'm all about pets and animals in this blog. We need to each be checking on our neighbors, watching for the homeless who will need a reprieve in this weather, and simply care for one another no matter what species or condition. Normal conditions are out the window through at least the middle of next week.
Thankfully, I found a pair of small/petite Carthart coveralls at Buchheit years ago. Already wore them to work with my cowboy boots one night in case I needed to help someone else on my way. BTW, do you know how to properly use jumper cables? If not, then DON'T; wait for help. Fire up your cell phones. I hear milk is already in short supply. Call me if you need dog food - I can drive and get some....
If you need to bundle up to go outside, so do your pets! They are part of your family. Remember to wipe paws as the regular salt used on streets is not good for pets.
PETS ARE PART OF YOUR FAMILY!
Cape County and its neighbors pride themselves on being caring communities.
MAKE IT SO!
