Precious Little Souls
Ricky, smiling Beagle
I no longer count the "number" of dogs in sanctuary here at Silverwalk - I count lives. Keeps me focused on why and for Whom we are doing what we do in rescue, adoption, and fostering.
The woman who drove the new old Beagles to the vet called them "precious little souls." Benita is spot on.
Both these Beagles, Lucy and Ricky, are densely heart-worm positive. Both intact. Lucille has a pendulous mammary tumor. Deciding how or if we can intervene in any of her disease states is dicey. Ricky looks more healthy till you hear him cough and ignore the prominent bones from lack of food or over-use in hunting. Their life expectancy is limited.
Why would dogs like this be so precious?
Because, coming home from work Saturday morning, both are in the front yard, running, tripping over each other to be the first to say "hi" and "why were you gone for so long?" while pushing their noses through the fence for petting. Happy dogs, smiling me.
We re-learned the value of lives this week in our nation.
Precious little souls, indeed.
