Roller Derby ROCKS
I only knew roller derby by films and TV. I was pleasantly surprised last night, Sat. Feb. 26, when I attended the "bout" between Cape Girardeau Roller Girls and Southern Illinois Roller Girls. Everyone was very nice, very enthusiastic and the event was SOLD OUT. I watched the last tickets sold myself. Alice and I were at a table front and center in the foyer of the A.C. Brase Arena building with our information on Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary and its small division, Silverwalk. We had wonderful discussions with patrons during half-time and at the end; before hand, folks were more focused on either getting into the arena or buying a ticket. There was a band, a honor guard presenting the colors, the National Anthem was sung well by a gentleman whose name I don't remember and whoosh, there was skating. Sometimes it wasn't pretty - body checks are derigeur.
CGRG donated part of the proceeds this evening to Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary. They do this every bout - donate part of their proceeds to a worthy cause. At half-time, a rep from Old Town Cape received a physically giant check from the previous bout; the next bout, Mar. 12, will benefit SADI, a local organization dear to my heart. I didn't know they did this till Alice asked me to be there with her. Not only do the skaters and crowd have fun; this truly is a philanthropic group of young women. .
As I watched some skating on the oval, sympathetically feeling blisters already forming on my feet, I remembered skating in Sioux Falls, SD and Mpls., MN - playing "crack the whip," skating backwards, moving to the music. So, yeah, I would love to do some training if the CGRG offer it again - but, have no fear, this middle aged woman won't qualify for the track. Now, give me a Triumph Spitfire or a Porsche 911, a track and some cones, and you have a whole different story :).
