98# of Love
This has been some week. I am now working weekends so have most of Monday - Friday off, at least for January. I am enjoying it! I have also found muscles I forgot were there.
On Tuesday, I personally adopted a 6 y/o blind Bloodhound female who had been a breeder; she had never left her home nor ridden in a car. We spent sometime on the hillside of southbound I-55 after she tried to drive for me and I could not get her to the back without leaving the car. I was totally unprepared with inadequate leashing and safe set-up in the car; on the other hand, most people send collars with their dogs like when you sell a horse - the halter goes along. Not this time - she had a nicely done twine collar with hand piece - thank God cause sometimes it is the only means I had to save her from running off after hearing the semis go by. After about 45 minutes or so of terror, she was tired enough so I could dash to my car and get my cell. Called the police. I had waved and indicated the phone sign to multiple drivers on the freeway: they either ignored me, thought I was on the hillside for our health or waved back :(. The police came, enabling me to get a better leash from my car and finally getting her back in the car :). YESH, Katey! She then had her spay on Thursday - still does not like riding in the car - go figure :). Bottom line: she is a very sweet dog who is loved by everyone who meets her. Melanie Coy can hardly wait to lay track for that nose which has served her so well during her life.
Lesson to all: no matter what your current plans for your dogs, life changes. Prepare your dogs - get them socialized to multiple situations and different circumstances, take them for rides in the car (not in the bed of a pick up, please, unless safely restrained), walk them out away from their normal milieu - you get the drift.
I now have an outside dog which I have never had before. I grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis, MN. Our dogs and cats were all inside, else they got killed in traffic. New adventure again - but Katey is a love, I adore Bloodhounds and am looking forward to trying her out with tracking.
