  • Here! Here! The world would be a much better place if everyone would just clean up after themselves!

btw, Ms. Bobbie, we are ready to add a new addition to our home. A puppy. We would like a terrier. We had a staffordshire, 'pit' for 14 yrs. we are very much interested in adopting from a local shelter but would like a good natured family pet. Should I have any concerns about rescue dogs esp. from fighting backgrounds?

  • Oh, just wait til Sheila figures out what an AC vent is, she'll be laying on it all the time! When little Gretchen is rabbit chasing, mole hunting (our westie taught her that), or squirrel barking, the only thing that can get her attention is the AC kicking on. Then it's into the house and onto a vent!

Can't tell if it's fur or not, but the way she's layin', I'd say she could be lookin' a little portly there :) It's a sheltie thing. She might enjoy the green bean diet. Take the lbs your vet thinks she should weigh, feed one cup food per 20 lbs, then some frozen green beans to help fill her up so she doesn't become the Tasmanian Sheltie.

We call it the miracle diet and even have a song to go with it lol

    "Green beans in my food,

    like little green pegs,

cause I look like a sausage,

    with 4 little legs" :)

Enjoy her, shelties are so fun. Not crazy about kids (neither am I so I can relate), but just a joy to be around!

  • First, if you want another Staffie type dog (and Spanky has won me over), then you should have no more concerns than w/any other dog - I know rescuers who temperament test dogs w/children, people and the whole shabang before an adoption. I could set you up w/her, no problem! YESH, rescues of any breed! If you don't have cats, I right now know of a perfect dog!

Yes, colliemom, Sheila does indeed need the green bean diet. She doesn't move much, preferring to be a princess upon whom others should wait (not that we do but the thought is always put out there) - I only feed her what my small Doxie gets and still, she is portly! Thanks for reminding about the green beans - we will give it a try. Oh, and the same blue eyed Doxie DOES appreciate the AC/heat vent at those times of the year....

  • Bobby- We tried for YEARS to get a few pounds off our sheltie and the green bean diet is the only one that works. She's at a lean mean 30 lbs, she pitter patters again :) Shelties tend to be weight gainers for some reason. When we got one for foster, 2 out of 3 were so obese they almost couldn't walk. Get a few pounds off Sheila and she'll be like a new woman!

PS, she SHOULD be treated like a princess. In all honesty, of all the dogs we took in, Shelties are the ones we enjoyed the most. So smart and eager to please. They are barkers, though. Keeps the wax cleaned out of your ears lol So cute!

Take it from someone who had a REALLY hard time keeping to a strict diet with my precious yipper, I can't describe the good feeling I got when she could run up the steps again. That makes it ALL worth it.

Turnip- There was a gal in St. Louis that worked with Pits and really evaluated them prior to adopting out. I think it was either Mutts and Stuff or Doggy Doodles. The gal's name was Gail. I'm so sorry you lost your friend, but it really fills that empty space when you decide to have another join your family. Good luck on your quest!

  • PS. Don't tell Sheila I mentioned her issue! We wouldn't want her to think all the other dogs are laughing at her :)
