The start to my Friday morning - running over a deer

Friday, November 14, 2008

On Oct. 20 I wrote an article about motorists being urged to use caution during deer season. This morning on my way into work I ran over a doe that had been dead for an undetermined amount of time. At this point, there is no damage to my car (thank you Jesus) but I'm taking a wait and see attitude. Since the dead doe is in an area that is not well lit, it would be easy for other cars to do as I did. But hopefully that's not the case.

Please be careful out there and watch for these four-legged creatures. Most times I've visited my wife this fall at her school I've seen some deer nearby. And there are many other places around here where deer have been spotted.

So, here are some tips, courtesy of State Farm Insurance:

  • Be aware of posted deer crossing signs. These signs are placed in known active deer crossing areas.
  • Be aware that deer are most active during the evening, between 6 and 9 p.m.
  • At night, use high-beam headlamps as much as possible to illuminate the sides of the road where deer can linger.
  • Be aware that deer often move in packs – if you see one deer, there is a good chance several more are just a few yards behind.
  • Do not rely on car-mounted "deer whistles." Studies have shown deer are not affected by this deterrence method.
  • If a collision with a deer seems inevitable, it may be best not to swerve. The risk of personal injury is greatly increased by swerving, which can place you in the path of oncoming vehicles or may cause you to lose control of your vehicle.

I remember a time when if a motorist saw something dangerous in the middle of the road they would (if safe) make an attempt to clear it off the road themselves or in the least contact the city police or county sheriff department and notify them about it. Perhaps I am the only one who still practices this type of thing.

And this is why we have deer season!
If we all hug a tree instead of a gun this deer season, a lot of other people would be seriously hurt.

cubbytodd,
Just my story the day before deer season. Another co-worker hit the same deer only moments before I did. The doe was orginally in the center turning lane but was spinning into the left lane when my co-worker drove by. I hope everyone's careful today because hitting deer is a serious problem this time of year.

Um, Babe, what does running over a dead deer have to do with bow hunting in the city? Was the deer killed with a bow? Does it really matter?

Must be a slow news day.

BABE,
We will look into the bow hunting issue and get back to you on this subject.

So what do you think of the bow hunting issue in Cape now?
